McCluraGood load for .223 21" Carbine Contender
I'm looking for load info for my new .223 21" carbine. It is a TC Barrel. I would like to shoot the 50 grn V-Max or 55 grn SPSX Hornady for P Dogs and other vamints.

HobieIn any .223 chambered firearm, I like 27 gr. W748, CCI 450, any brass, most 50 and 55 gr. bullets. Start 10% below and work up. I am not responsible for how you use this information. I do use this in my Contender 21" factory barrel but also used it in my former AR-15 carbine.

McCluraThanks Hobie. I use 25.5 W748 w/50grn V-Max and SPSX in my 14" .223 Contender. I will try it and your load. I got the barrel on target last night with Win 45grn HP Factory ammo which was not bad. I could hit a clay bird on the 150yd berm. I'm looking for a good PDog round.

PinkertonThese are about the same loads I've used, 27.5 gr Win 748 over 50gr Hornady SXSP. In both super 14" and Custom Shop 24" barrel. MOA or less in both barrels. This seems to be a max load for me, start lower and work up.

Dave JenkinsH Benchmark is reputed to be a good burner under the 50 grain pills. I'll let you know how it did for me after the weekend.

FerdinandI would also suggest the Winchester 748. That's what I started with and have never felt a need to try any other powder in a .223. It has yielded excellent results for me with projectiles from 50 grains up to the 68 grain BTHP.
I have had 2 T/C bbls 14" and 21" and two TCRs in 223 that have all loved 26.5 gr of 748 w/ 50-55 gr bullets.
Like the 270 and H4831 IMHO I think the 223 and W748 kind of go hand in hand 'specially in the contenders

McCluraDid the range yesterday. Took all of the advice, put it on paper and compaired all of the loads.
Used 25.5 grns of W748 w/Hornady 55grn SPSX, in new Winchester brass. Took the 21" contender out for a try.
First shot was 1/2" above center x on a 100 yd target. Gave it four clicks up and shot 3 in a dime size group. I quit. I put this same load in my 14" Contender and it shot 1.5" high of center at 100 yds about 1/2" right. Shot a 1" group with it. My buddies had their .223 Contenders there and shot all of my ammo. Their pisotls like the same load. Now I have to load about 200-300 so we can go take some P Dogs or Coyotes. Thanks for all of the help. I might just post a photo of the targe tomorrow. Best I've done with the .223 so far. I'm going to 200yds the first chance I get back to the range.
