Duhawki45 cal Sabot in 454
Anybody ever use a plastic sabot / 40 cal pistol bullet in a 454? Ought to be able to get some very impressive velocities.

HairtriggerPart of the fun of the 454 is the recoil. A light 40 cal bullet would ruin that. When my friends shoot my 454 they grin from ear to ear!
If I want a bit more speed I will get out my XP-100 or Lone eagle

Lowrider 49I've been thinking about trying that same thing in a 450 Marlin rifle, but I'm betting the sabot will fail before the velocity gets too much over 2000 fps. If I try it, I'll let you know how it works.

DuhawkiWell, to those who really like recoil, what I'm talking about probably seems to make little sense. Certainly it would reduce recoil. But what this is about for me is hunting. I want a flat trajectory and a high velocity. There are at least a few 40 cal bullets that could handle the velocity. 155 grain Barnes X comes to mind.
Regarding the sabot coming apart, Maybe. But my muzzleloader will shoot 'em all day long at 2300 fps. If I have to, I'll machine my own from a bearing grade thermoset.

HairtriggerYears ago I had information on a company that made sabots for putting 22 caliber bullets into 30 cal cartridges like Remington used to do with their "accelerator" rounds.
Remington went near ot at 4000fps with those

HairtriggerIf you have some time on your hands you may look here
http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/archive/index.php/f-9.htmlI started looking but I get distracted very easily!! I keep finding many interesting articles!!
Last evening I did a google search for "sabots 40 cal reloading" or something like that and found a link to a company that does make several different sabots but can no longer find them!! Mental note next time BOOKMARK!!
Found it

I did not see excatly what you are looking for

Lowrider 49I tried the 30 cal into 50 cal thinking I could shoot .308 bullets in my 50 cal ML...WRONG...these are for .308 into 50 BMG and look wonderful, but you can't use them in a muzzle loader!!
MMP or Knight high pressure sabots should work to 2300 - 2400 fps. I use them in my ML 10 and they work fine.
I gotta try the 180 gr .40 cal in the 450 Marlin as soon as I get some extra brass.

johnchI have been loading the saboted 40 cal bullets in the 45 acp and 45 colt for 2-3 years.
I found faster burning powders are needed in both .
IMO the ease the sabot slides down the barrel will not build up enough pressure to get the slower powders to burn completly.
In both I use Mag pistol primers to get the powder to burn cleaner.
For the 45 acp I started low and worked up till I got good ejection ( still no real recoil )
I have never run the loads over the cronagraf but they both do a great job on wood chucks.
Both guns shoot good groups but the plastic fouling is fun to get out .

Duhawki45 Colt is close enough for me! I will be shooting 454s saboted 40 cal bullets in a '92 Puma with a 20 inch barrel. As you would know, the 454 is basically a 45 Colt stretched a tenth of an inch. Powder of interest is VV N-110. I am interested in any and all information and recommendations and do / don't input you may offer. Bullets?, Sabots?, Powders? Velocity Data? Terminal perf? etc.
