question on Encore scope base hole spacing
For those of you with non-TC factory barrels, how far from the breechface is the very first hole for the scope base screws? On TC factory stuff, the first is generally only a half-inch of so away.

On one custom RIFLE barrel I have, the first screw is at least 3 inches away from the breechface. This makes for a rather awkward situation. This almost lends itself to a scout rifle setup. Last week, I have inquired regarding the norm but have not received an answer. If this was a pistol barrel, it would not be so critical. But on a rifle barrel, this much room really seems odd to me.

Bobby,
If it's a used barrel, the person that ordered it that way wanted more eye relief. When I order a custom carbine barrel, I get the holes drilled so the rear of the mount is at least 2 to 3" ahead of the rear of the barrel. I can work with 1 1/2" but that is my limit. This lets me mount the scope so the adjustment knobs are centered between the rings. The standerd holes set the mount and scope too far to the rear for me, especially when shooting from the bench. This works for me but may not work for you.

Jules-
Your post is a good one and serves to remind me that everyone shoots a little differently and that everyone has different preferences. For me, if the neasr-end of the base is 0.5 to 1.5" from the beginning of the barrel, it's just about right for my style of shooting.

Bobby,
I know it's a pain in the butt, but you can always get the holes in the base redrilled to your needs for that barrel. Most any gunsmith will drill the holes in the base where you need i'm sure, or you could just get VVCG to make ya one up,that's if you use a weaver type.

Bobby, I have and like mine ~2" forward of the breechface. This puts the turrets of most larger scopes dead center of the two rings using a leupold DD Encore base.....for my prefered eye relief using the standard factory rynite buttstock. How many holes are drilled in this barrel of yours?

Bullberry has a standard set up that is about 2" in front of the breech. They will drill the holes where ever you wish "if you ask"
My 221 barrel has them mounted foward seems to work OK

I just looked at my 7mm Bullberry, and it has the holes starting app. 2" from the breechface. And the setup works quite well. But the 3+ inches on the other barrel, to me, seems a little too far forward -- at least for optimum comfort in my own personal shooting style.
