25 Cal. Suggestions?
I've got the hots for a quarter-bore. I'll start out by stating I will be using it on a Contender frame, with a 10" barrel. I'm not interested in a longer configuration, because this time around, all my barrels are 10". The .256 is a little anemic, and a .25 TCU or Herrett seem to have a little too much case capacity for the 10" barrel. Anyone have any other alternative suggestions? Comments? Thanks,,,,,,,,Bug.

Bug,
I would reconsider the 25 TCU. I think it would perform fine in a 10 inch barrel.

I think the .25 Whisper would be exactly what you are looking for. It falls directly between the capacity of the .256 WM and the TCU.

I've played with the .257 Dart (essentially a .250 Savage) in the Contender for years now.....it's worked well and I posted an article on it's performance to my website: www.singleactions.com

Try the 25 BR.

try either the 257 sabre cat which I believe is based on improved and shortened 30-30 case or try the 357 max necked to 257 and left full length. My ideas of good starts.

How about a 25-20 Ackley Improved?

A 25x221 or 25 Hornet would be pretty neat.....

Nevermind about the 25-20 Ackley improved, it shouldn't have anymore case capacity than a 256 Win.

I was told by VV Dave that my 25 Imp Hornet is on the way.

The 25 Whisper or 25-221 sound about right.

Bug, Given your parameters (i.e. powder capacity less than 25 TCU and to be used in a 10" barrel), I think I'd go along w/ the 25 Hornet Improved or 25X221, without rim (AKA "25 Whisper") or with rim. [Wink] Gary T.

You can use .360 DW brass to make a rimmed Whisper.

IME, the .25-35 and .25 TCU are VERY similar in performance.

I do apreciate all the responses. Many more than I originally expected. This will keep me happily comparing case drawings and running internal ballistics. I like the idea of a .25 whisper, and a rim would be even better. Thanks, Rob. For that matter, THANKS EVERYONE!>>>>>>Bug. [Eek!]

Just a suggestion on the 25 Whisper, if you plan on shooting mostly lighter weight bullets, watch the throat length that the barrel maker uses. JD uses a long throat in the Whisper series for the longer, heavier bullets which will not produce the best accuracy with the lighter ones.

Good luck and good shooting...

No one has mentions the 25 Classic????????
Should be great in a short tube. After all, the parent case was designed for a short barrel.
I bought one in a carbine length barrel and am very happy with it.
