Stupid question but,
How do you measure a group when the group is smaller then the bullet being used???????? [Eek!]

When holes are touching, you can measure center to center, such as with 44mag holes that are a cloverleaf, just pic the holes furthest apart, then use the radius of the hole size to figure out the exact center of each hole, and measure from center to center.

Otherwise a one hole group using .25 caliber would always be a .25" group!

Not that I shoot that small of groups Sean. [Big Grin] But with the 44 caliber bullets at 50yds or less it's tough just the same. Sometimes I set up a target with black 1" squares about 2" apart. Then I will take 1 shot at each square. I can figure it out that way.

Jules

Measure across the group at the widest point and then subtract the bullet diameter from that measurement.

Not really a paper puncher....just know how to measure a group......competition has never really interested me and, the older I get, the more I realize that tiny groups don't kill animals [Big Grin]

I've seen guys that could put them all in one hole from the bench....but the couldn't hit an elephant under field conditions!!!

The ones that impress me are the silhouette shooters that can knock down the rams at 500 meters from a offhand, standing position......now them boys can shoot!!!

AYE Mark! That is the easier way to do what I was attempting to show: thanks! Just goes to show that flu and head colds do have an impact upon one's intellect [Big Grin]

Jules,
Your question is far from stupid.

Stupid questions just hit an all time low tonight when a guy came back with expletives about wanting just a simple yes or no answer and said I was an a_ _ hole for suggesting he needed to do some homework on my website.

My reply to his indignation also hit an all time low, or at least a ten year low.

The question was: Will you make a 26" TC Contender barrel in either .338-378 Weatherby or .378 Weatherby?

Now I'm trying to decide who was more stupid, him or me. Him for asking such a question in the first place, plainly displaying the fact that he has no business using a Contender except with stock barrels and factory ammo, or me for not simply saying, "No," and letting it go at that, hoping he would go plague someone else with his question that truly is not sensible or intelligent, the short definition of stupid.

If you have a stupid question, Jules, you, my friend, will have to dig pretty deep to top that one.

Mike

Mike,

But the really penetrating question is "...and can I kill a deer with it?"

[Big Grin]
[Razz]

I hear you Mike, and I can sympathize. If you can't laugh with them [these type often do not see the humor that they so easily engender] at least keep your sanity and laugh at them [Smile]

I very much appreciate what a pleasure and delight it is to deal with the intelligent, polite, informed and courteous membership of this forum, and also most of the internet auction and e-mail business I get.

Ahh, but what would we do without that 5% of our customer base that is comprised of wierdos, crackpots, dingbats, and downright ding-a-lings?

Now down here in our family horse ranch-tack-firearms business, the traffic is of a calmer more laid-back and experienced sort, the sort that typcially has something to teach me from their years of experience varmint or big game or wing shooting, though I occasionally get some increadible phone inqueries from what I affectionately refer to as "telecustomers", all indicators therein suggesting that at least that segment of the human race is selectively breeding itself for stupidity [Eek!]

Example I shared on another forum awhile back: One woman called me several months ago to ask if I would monogram sweaters. We are a horse ranch and gun store folks [Smile] She then proceeded to ask me if I could give her the phone # of someone who did, as if an avid horse rancher, Varmint hunter and gun store owner such as myself would have a mental rolodex of such things and the number of the nearest sweater monogramer right on the tip of my tongue just for such an occasion! [Smile]

At the large shop 60 miles north of here, where I worked while earning my first college degree, and where I still go and fill in for the owner during hunting season, there are way too many stories I could tell of walk-in customers that are of the "I'll never forget that one" sort, like the squalid and unclean fellow just this last week who did not understand why I really did not want to see his recently healed third degree battery acid burn [that he managed to aquire from picking up an old car battery] that he had adorning his svelt 55inch hairy gelatinous stomach .....

The other story I'll relate is of a fellow last season who surely skipped all language and speech classes throughout whatever education he had. This fellow walks up to the counter and barks out "Ah wanna Poaty Fow-Cho fo' ma Boomstick." Now after a stunned silence and seeing that the three of us behind the counter had not understood him at all (evident by our blank uncomprehending and apprehensive stares) he simply repeated himself louder "Ah wanna Poaty Fow-Cho fo' ma BOOMSTICK" and also made a slight twiddling motion with his fingers as if that would surely do the trick and clear up any possible misunderstanding.

Well, after much back and forth, we finally figured out that he was looking for a ported full-choke for his shotgun.

Ahh well... it doesn't take all kinds, but there sure ARE all kinds [Big Grin]

The exchange over the .378 Weatherby in the Contender did not end.

One of the last comments I made was that if his estate would not sue me, I really should chamber a Contender barrel for him just to disprove his allegations that I did not really know how to make a barrel, as if I were somehow covering the fact by declining to chamber this round in a Contender. I also told him it would probably be the last round he would ever fire, and definitely the one and only round for that Contender.

But he no doubt still thinks I am the stupid one. We'll see what happens. Maybe a conversion is possible, and we can bring him into the fold.

Mike - I thought it was the role of a heretic to dilute and obfuscate the "gospel". Don't tell me that you are really trying to evangelize in the name of Contender?!

A friend of mine has an applicable statement for this thread..."You can't cure dumb a$$"

There are those who worship at the altar of TC and strongly embrace the TC gospel, to which I am a heretic, yes, and faithfully performing those duties ascribed to the office of such a heretic.

I proselytize in the name of Contenders and Encores, yes; evangelize, no way. That is reserved for only One!

The party in question and I have I think ended the formality of head-butting. I apologized for offending him in the first place by even assuming ANY level of understanding and offered to answer any questions in a more tactful manner. Made me choke, but no matter how dumb the question, I was in the wrong.

Hopefully we'll have a more reasonable and prudent member "in the fold."

Mike
