It sounds like a "Black Eye" but it's not.

I'm looking for a USED 36x Leupold Series "D" for a center-grip XP-100 in 6.5-284. If you know of someone who wants to move one please let me know.

sscoyotei remember a black eye a feeeew years ago, in Upper Cherry Creek, in the Sangre de Cristo's-- remember???

xphunterYes, I remember. I knew it was either pass up the shot on that muley buck or pull the XP closer to me to be steady enough for the shot. Of course, your 7-08 XP was a puff-cake in the recoil department and you made the same shot unscathed.

P.S. I got the regs and scope covers

B_KoesI know that Hammer47 was trying to move one...thought it was in the classifieds but I'm not sure of that at the moment.
FWIW, I've got a Sightron 24x scope that has more eye relief than any other brand that I've looked at (Leupold, Bushnell Elite, Weaver).

xphunterB_Koes,
Yes, I saw that post somewhere. So far I have been seeing prices of $425 to $450 which is a little much for me now. The reason I am looking for this specific scope is to have it modified for use with my 6.5-284 XP-100. To my knowledge, this is the only scope that will get me what I desire--A Long Eye Relief 20 power scope.

Gary TXphunter,
Would you mind sharing w/ us some of the details of your scope conversion?

A few years ago, I contacted a few of the folks who do such work w/ the idea of bumping a 10X Burris IER to a higher magnification. At the time, no one was doing such work (actually, seems like they said it was technically not feasible). Your idea of approaching the same goal from the opposite direction (starting w/ a rifle scope, dropping the magnifications, and increasing the eye relief) is interesting....

B_KoesThat is a very interesting proposition and I am most intrigued. Please share your findings on this type of conversion. When you're talking long eye relief for a 20x...just how many inches of eye relief?
20 March 2003, 07:09
xphunterB_Koes & Gary T,
I have talked to Burris in the past I they were not even mildly interested in a high mag LER scope or modifying a current by doubling it.
The eye relief is 10+ (sometimes near 20)inches. Since I have never seen one I can't say from personal experience. Most of the conversions (which is very few) that he has done like this in past have been for overseas accounts. Wally Siebert has been doing scope conversions for a long time. He does this only with the Leupold fixed power scopes. One of the older 36 power scopes would work, but since I am using a large case capacity (6.5-284) compared to a normal varmint or bench cartridge he suggested the "D" series scope which was their latest model. He may be able to do this with the new generation of fixed target scopes from Leupold, but he hasn't had one in his hands to try yet. Maybe with the new Leupold that are over 40 power you could even have a higher magnification. This has been a long journey of frustration up until this point. When it comes to adequate optics for long range shooting with specialty handguns there was nothing. Now I know of another option. Conversion and a new reticule (which is mandatory for it to work) is $130 plus shipping. Cheaper than you thought it would be? Now you know why I am excited.

B_KoesThis does sound exicting indeed. I would be elated to own a scope that was in the 12-15x range with an eye relief of around 14" (which is what Leupold lists as eye relief for their 2.5-8x scope on the highest power). So he only does this on Leupold scopes? I think that I gotta find me one...
For the application that I'm wanting to use it, eye relief is crucial to keep at least 14". Do you think that something like this can be done? Send me a phone number of this fella and I'll talk to him if it is appropriate.

Gary TXphunter,
I'd also be interested in contacting your man about the possibility of a similar projet.

xphunterB_Koes, Gary, and sscoyote,
Wally's phone number is: 425-392-3567.
He has been boosting magnification on scopes and changing reticules for a long time now.
