Forend screws?
Anybody got a source for 8-40 screws for the Contender forends, length could be trimmed if only longer ones available. Everywhere I look I have no luck. Would like to pillar bed some forends and need some new screws.

Thanks

Contenders use common No. 10x32 screws, not 8x40s.

Encores use 8x40s, but it is not a common size, and I have not found an alternative source of the right length yet, only the short ones used for scope mounts. If Brownell's has 8x40s long enough for the pillars you use, this will work. Look in the screws section of their catalog.

Most hardware and automotive stores with fastener cabinets will have an assortment of 10x32s. I prefer the socket head screws, but there will also be various other head shapes and methods of driving them, ie, slots, square socket, phillips, etc. Plus you will find them in blue (black oxide) and stainless.

Just make sure the length you pick will not project into the barrel channel more than about 1/32."

The dovetail slots are only about 1/16th inch deep (actually about .070"). If the screw projects into the channel enough to contact the bottom of the slot, you will literally pull the dovetail lock out of the slot if you continue to tighten while the forend is still not snug.

I found mine at HOME DEPOT in the hardware section. I used the hex head style on the KTS Ammo Benchrest Forend and they also had the Aluminum sleeves to Pillar bed them.
Cheap thrills for 3 bucks!

KENTN,
Were these the 10x32s or 8x40s?

If 8x40s, did you notice the name of the screw manufacturer on the bin or box?

Thanks for the correction on the size, I was making finding screws harder on myself than it needed to be.

Thanks for the help everybody.

The rest of life should be so easy!

If anyone does find a source for longer 8x40 screws, I am interested in knowing where myself.

Mike, Mine are 10x32 as I only have Contenders...soon to be 4 total [Smile]
Hell I got tired of waiting on the G2 and found another stainless and blue frame that I pick up next week at the Texas State Silly Wet Match.

Just gotta have a special frame for the 222 RMI Carbine [Big Grin]

Since I always have a spare...the package is from
Crown Bolt Inc.
Cerritos, CA 90703

10X32 stainless Cap screw socket.

They may have the 8x40 you need. I've been trying to find 6X40 stainless plugs for my Ruger MK 2 front sight holes so the 40 pitch is not common at all.

Good Luck
