xphunterOnly About A Month Away....
until I get my hands on my long awaited Long Range Handgun:
6.5-284 in a customized XP-100. The stock should go back to H-S for painting either the end of this week or sometime next week. I'm starting to get anxious. Just had to share good news!

<tc2>How close will the 6.5 x 284 ballistics be to a 260 rem? Who is doing your custom work? What bullet and weight are you thinking about using?

xphuntertc2,
Greg Tannel of Gre-Tan Rifle gtrtooling.com is building the XP. He has also built me a 7.82 Patriot XP-100. Greg lives in Kersey, CO, just outside of Greeley. This specialty handgun is being built strictly for accuracy at long range. Gre has done pretty much everything he would do on a 1,000 yard bench rig on this XP-100. It has a 17 inch Krieger barrel with a varmint taper or heavier. He is double pinning the action which he will bed even though it is an aluminum V-Block (H-S Precision Stock). I am hoping for performance beyond what a 260 Remington can do in a rifle length configuration. Greg also had a hand in sscoyote's 6.5-284 XP-100 (which has just broke sscoyotes all time long range coyote kill today 906 yards) which originally started life as 6.5x308 imp. 35 degree shoulder which was owned by yours truly.
I need to ask Steve what his loads are chronoing at. The two cartridges are comparable to the 30-06 verses the 308. the 284 win. case is a ballistic twin to the ole 06 case. The 260 remington is the 308 necked down or the 243 necked up.
I will start with 140 grain Sierra Match bullets. This will used for shooting at long range which will include dog shooting. Antelope hunting and stand hunting are the only big game applications I would use this for. I'm not going to carry that hunk of steel up the mountain.
