Bighorn sheep-the XP-100 takes another one
Some of you guys know my hunting buddy Steve. He has published several articles in Precision Shooting, not to mention a number of others. He just recently got back from his first bighorn sheep hunt where he took a 3/4 by 7/8 curl bighorn with one shot from his Remington XP-100 in 6.5-284. Range was three hundred yards. Packing it out was really tough, but in spite of all of that he is still walking on air. He would be writing this himself, but he doesn't have a computer that is hooked up to the internet. The guys who went to the Bower clinic in Nebraska know Steve-He asked me to tell you all "Hi!"

Hey xphunter, next time you talk to Steve, tell him Congratulations from SD Handgunner.

Well I didn't buy another Striker, but rather bought a Contender instead. Wrung it out on Sunday, and it looks like it is going to be a good shooter, at least so far.

XP,

That is great! I have always wanted to go sheep hunting [Mike Bellm tells me that Elk are rather addictive and I should try them first].

Tell your friend congratulations!

SD,
Congrats on the TC-Glad your back in the game.

Sean,
Elk is addictive, I usually get a yearly fix, but I'm going to have to go through withdrawals this year.

I'll relay the congrats to Steve.

Sounds like a great hunt!! The truth of the matter is that when you tell most people, even alot of hunters, that you made a 300yd 1 shot pistol kill they say yea...right, roll their eyes, and ask about the weather [Smile] They just can't comprehend it. We know different. Thats neat. mvm

pshooter,
You are right about the unbelief! One of the reasons I feel comfortable posting about actual distances on big game on this forum is first, we will range any long shot, and second a number of people (Bower Seminar) have witnessed Steve & I shoot at ranges way beyond 300 yards.
I can't tell you how much I enjoy dog shooting with a group of rifle hunters who have never seen an accurate specialty handgun in the field at long range (Over 300 yards)-seeing is believing.
I shot all three of my XP's today-First time since the clinic. It sure felt good!

I haven't broken the 300 mark yet, but I've made 290. One shot...one kill. And your right, it does feel great. I bet it was beautiful where he was hunting. mike

Mike,
Be patient and one of those days that shot will come-We don't look for long shots, we get as close as we can. But in the mountains in the country we hunt shots over 200 are the norm, whereas in dark timber shots under 100 are the norm. We prefer the more open country because we enjoy spot-n-stalk hunting more. It is beautiful country. Steve had a number of opportunities on does/ewes (forget the right name).
I will proably save the money up and we will begin applying as a group. It may take 6-10 years but it will be worth it when we draw.
We both hunt with XP's and we have hunted together since 1986 in the mountains.

I guess I didn't mention where Steve was hunting. He was in the mid to Southern area of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range. The other resident hunter who went with him still has not tagged one yet.

We're planning a Wyoming antelope hunt in the fall of 03 and I expect there will be several "reach out and touch" shots from our group. We all will be hunting with XP's and Strikers so it should make some great memories. Hope your friend fills his tag this year! mvm
