22 Cooper Centerfire Magnum - NEW PROJECT!!
If i remember right it was a problem with the initial run of brass.

Is there anyone else out there that was interested in the cartridge?? This would have been a great rechamber for the 22 long rifle barrels out there..... [Frown]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE!
Since starting this post i have found out the following. I will continue to update this info as it becomes available.

Dies - $69 from CH Tool & Die
Shellholder - $16.95 from RCBS (must call and order, 800-533-5000)
Brass - $26/50 from Schroeder Bullets (Phone 619-423-3523) No web site or email address
Barrel - (not sure yet)
Twist Rate - 1-14" (per Cooper Arms)

* Schroeder offers brass in 17 caliber too!

That was the last I had heard on it also Mike. There was a fellow that had a BUNCH of real neat .22 rimfires and some of the Coopers when they first showed up around Nixa Mo. I think.
Hey, Tommy, do ya know this fellow off the top of your head?
Any way he had several of the .22 Coopers and one or two of the .17's. The only reason I remember this fellow is because he had THE NEATEST, falling block .22 I have ever seen. It was an old German Gallery type rifle if I remember correctly. Looked like a minerature Schutzen rifle.
I can look around here if ya want for his card, I just saw it the other day.

Mike- I have one from Fox Ridge it is 11" SS bull Barrel and it shoots great with 40gr V-max bullets, its great medicine for tree rats. I got my brass from Schroeder Bullets,1421 Thermal Ave, San Diego CA 92154, 619-423-3523. They make the brass from swaged down 22 Hornet brass then machine the base and rim. So far I have reloded this brass 5 times with no loss. The velocity I get is greater than the 22WRM from a rifle.

Thanks for the info Albert!!

I imagine that this brass is purty pricey?? Where did you get your load data?
21 July 2003, 15:07
Albert T. Tomblin
Mike- The load data was from Accurate Arms reloading manual, the big red one. When I purchased the brass 4 or 5 years ago it was $25.00 for 50 rounds, I got 300 rounds, so far I have only used 150 rounds I just keep reloading them to see how many reloads I can get from them.

Thanks Albert. I sent Accurate an email requesting the data and will give them a call regarding the brass. Do they also have dies or did u obtain them elsewhere??
21 July 2003, 15:31
Albert T. Tomblin
I already had the dies, a local dealer was going out of buisness and had the dies, C-H/4D, I think they were $35.00 got them a couple years before I bought the barrel. Schoeder had the dies and I think they were $65.00 at the time I got the brass.

CH still lists the dies at $69. I am gonna try for a used set and then i will investigate a barrel. Not sure at this point if i wanna do this in a 10 or a 14. Hopefully i will come across a 14" long rifle barrel CHEAP and i can have OTT rechamber it.

The performance that you mention is great! Which Accurate powder are u using, #2, 5 or 7?

Thanks again for all the info!!
21 July 2003, 23:22
Albert T. Tomblin
I use #9, they list only three powders, N100,#9, and 1680.

I guess this case has a little more capacity than i expected.

Well, i am gonna try to build one, it would fill the bill nicely for a walking varmint pistol in some areas that i hunt that are heavily populated.

I talked to Steve Schroeder of Schroeder Bullets today. Brass IS available for $26/50. He also offers 22CCM basic that is 1.3" long, i believe, as well as others. He is sending me info along with the cartridge specs (drawing). This round is basically a straight wall with about .004" body taper. Steve also advised me that due to the use of Hornet brass i will most likely need to size the neck with a 22 Hornet sizer.

I also received the data from Accurate Arms on this round. 40 grain bullets at almost 2200 fps, not bad!

This project is doable! I am now looking for the dies and a barrel to get moving!! [Big Grin]

Schroeder also offers the brass for the 17. It is basically the same case as above but obviously with a shoulder.....

No new news today. I sent Dave @ CH Tool & Die an email about the dies. He has not sent me a refud for the 41x444 dies so i think that i will just get them instead. That is one part of this deal that will be behind me. All i have left is the brass and the barrel, LOL! [Big Grin]

I should receive the info on the brass in the next couple of days. Once i have that info i will be ready to order that stuff, LOL! [Big Grin]

Here is a run down on what i have so far....

Dies - $69 from CH Tool & Die http://www.ch4d.com/
Shellholder - $?? from RCBS
Brass - $26/50 from Schroeder Bullets
Barrel - $250 from OTT?? (not sure that i am ordering a new one yet)

Mike,
Sounds like your project is coming together nicely! Should be a really interesting project. [Big Grin] If you don't mind, I've got a few questions for 'ya:
What kind of velocity difference is there between the 22 CCM (1.16" long), vs the 22 CCM basic (1.3" long)?
A reloadable "17 HMR".....Hmmmmm.....That sounds 'kinda interesting, also.... [Wink]
Does Steve Schroeder has a website or e-mail?
Thanks, Gary T.

Good question. I have not received the info from Schroeder yet and am not sure that it will be included with the info he is sending me. I am considering this route but will wait to receive the info from him before I make a decision.

I couldnt agree more!! A reloadable 17hmr with a little more velocity! [Big Grin] For the 17 fans it would be too cool!!

I am sure that some guys think this whole deal is nuts but that is what us reloading nuts do!! [Big Grin]

I got the info from Schroeder yesterday and will scan it and post it here later today. He offers a bunch of brass including the 5.6x50R.

Looks like i will be going the route of the standard case length.

Mike,

I have not spoken to this man, but was told by a friend he is as sharp as a tack. He was recommended for special casings that are not out there. When I get to that point, I'll be calling him.

Thanks for posting the information, [Big Grin]

I forgot somthing else. I ran across a friend of mine that collects cartridges. He had a box of 5mm Velo Dog. DAMN if that wasn't a cute little devil. He told me that Fiocchi still made this and is not hard to find at all. I didn't think to ask if he knew if it was reloadable or not. Just another one to add to the "pot" of these "minis".

This round looks like it could take a standard 25acp shell holder, if not it would be close. I use one for the 5.7x28 cases I wildcat from...it's tight and probably needs to be lapped out, but it works. All of them seem to use the 0.308 head dia.

At one time the Varner was to be chambered in .22 CCM or something similar. The original company went out of business in the late 80's early 90's. I'm not sure if that's the one you might be talking about, but it was a replica of the Stevens Favorite. They also manufactured a perch belly Schutzen replica. The guy I spoke with at that time was from the Atlanta area. I still see a few rifles around from time to time.

The new company has yet to produce any rifles, but the website is www.varnerguns.com

That looks like it could be a lot of fun to play with.

How many cases fit in the 405 anyways?
