7-30 WatersHornady 120 grain 7mm SSP/7mm V-Max
Just got off the phone with Bob the other Ballistic tech from Hornady. I asked him to cut a 7mm 120 grain V-max in half yesterday just to make sure everyone was telling the truth. This morning I called him back and he is sending me the the bullets he cut. All of them have an Interlock Ring. The computer diagram they have also lists both bullets as one and the same.
Good news for those of us who shoot a 7-30 Waters, 7mm TCU or any other 7mm Single shot pistol.

Rich Jake Yeah Glad to get a final conclusion to this situation with the 7mm V-max!

Bobby TomekIt seems extremely odd that a bullet designed for varmint applications at higher velocities would have an interlock ring...
The "original" V-Max did not.

McCluraI was not aware the 7mm 120 V-Max had a interlock ring and I really didn't care. I have taken several good size deer wtih them in my 7-30 Waters w/a 12" barrel and a 14" barrel. All of the deer went down on the spot or traveled less than 20 yds. Good wound channel and I couldn't tell that they had come apart. I also use the 139SST in the 7-30's. It seems to be built a little more for rifles and higher velocities but it put a nice 8 pnt down within steps last year. I shoot most of my 7-30's around 2150-2200 fps. They give me 3 shot clusters at 100yds and shoot good out to my 150yd berm.

T/C nimrod7-30 Waters - didn't you think I really cut them in half myself when we discussed this on another board? Oh, that's right, I don't work at Hornady. Geez - try to help a guy out.......

T/C nimrodBobby - don't loose hope, you are also correct, kinda. The "original" V-max was another bullet design they had, renamed.(I forget, without my notes which # it went by) It's a shifting process that seems to go on at Hornady. I haven't found the lot yet, but somewhere around 1.5-2 years ago, the V-max construction changed.(I personnaly feel they started packaging the same bullets in two different part #'s. The sell price for the SSP and V-max are the same in my area)
I see the same trend happening in another bullet manufacturer, although I haven't been able to prove it as easily as the Hornady pills, (yet).

HobieI for one appreciate the info. I've been looking around locally and can't find any more of the 7mm SSPs.
I did find some of the .308 SSPs and bought 2 of the 3 boxes on hand. That was all the cash I had in my pocket, had to dig for change to pay the tax! Missing lunch today even!!

Will probably go back and get the last box. They also had a box of the Sierra 135s and I will probably get those as well. I have to admit that I hid them back on the shelf (they let me behind the counter I buy so much). Heck, I might be working there, got a 'round about job offer.

Yeah, like I
WANT to work.

7-30 WatersT/C nimrod: I don't remember who you are from another board. If it was shooters.com that was too long ago to remember.
Otherwise, I don't appreciate your smart ass comments when all we are trying to do is learn a little from each other. If you could have refreshed my memory as to the situation maybe I wouldn't be so defensive, but given the circumstances and how you posted on this topic I don't appreciate you attitude.
If you can't keep you ego in check then stay off my posts.

T/C nimrod7-30, now you will get a smart ass response. Check out the smiley. I meant no harm in the thread, sorry for any feelings you may have gotten from it. So I will stay off your posts, along with any information I may have.

7-30 WatersT/C nimrod,
Sorry for being so short fused. Your comments just caught me the wrong way. I usually don't pay any attention to the smiley faces or any other for that matter. I apologize. Your information is helpful and appreciated.
I don't remember you from any other board. I post in spurts and can never remember who I shared information with and who I haven't. Please accept my apology.

Bobby TomekT/C Nimrod-
Then, in essence, Hornady kept the #22811 (polymer-tipped) SSP and dropped the V-Max design -- but now package the SSP as a V-Max as well...
If that is indeed the case, then the current V-Max would do very well on deer as that's what it was intended for. But the original V-Max...well, that's another story...

T/C nimrodI won't hold a grudge. The sideswipe caught me off guard as well (I knew how I said it). I appreciate the response.

BCBHmmmm, this is interesting information. I used to shoot the 120 Single Shot Pistol Bullets from my Waters in the Contender and the 130 Single Shot Pistol Bullets in the 30-30 Contender. I see that Midsouth Shooters Supply still offers the 130s but not the 120s. Both bullets were very accurate in each caliber. I do have a couple hundred of each bullet. Glad I purchased them some years ago. I now shoot mostly cast bullets in both calibers, yet both of those SSP bullets have performed very well on a few white-tails that I have connected with using the 7-30 Waters and 30-30 Winchester in my Contender. It looks like change the name and increase the price??? Hornady shouldnt do such thingsAnd so it goes in the shooting industryBCB

That's my look at it. From a marketing standpoint, what will sell better - a bullet called "SSP", or one carrying the name "V-Max". I know which one gets my initial attention.

the Reloading Bench - about three months ago. I tend to "lurk" there, and throw a few bones at the dogs when something comes up. You were getting some bad information for a while, and felt an intervention was neccesary.

7-30 WatersT/C nimrod: Thanks for the refresher. I haven't posted there in about three months. Didn't find the Reloading board very helpful either. I like this one better.
