I remember you telling me about this barrel. Nice choice! Good all round thumper. Favorite loads?
My big bore and favorite at the moment is the 38-55 see Recoil Therepy for favorite load.
This caliber is just fun to shoot, when it hits the target backer it sounds like somebody dropping a watermelon, I chuckle everytime.

<Boltgun>50 Alaskan, 14" stainless with brake from Virgin Valley.
I try and stay with traditional British standards and put forth that anything .40" down through the 32's is "medium bore." By those standards I have only one Big Bore contender, .45-70

HHI6818Hey John,
Does your old 35-06JDJ count???? I let a fellow shoot it last week that had never shot an Encore or Contender. After he fired the first round he was smiling ear to ear. He claimed the muzzle blast felt like someone hit him in the face with a newspaper. He fired two more rounds and drove home with a smile on his face.
19 July 2002, 16:30
<Fireball221>Ok if we are counting the smaller stuff like 30 caliber..I also have a 15" 300 winmag...Now that is a "Fireball"
Lots of Noise Fire and Flame
Fireball
My collection is small, but I love them just the same.
14inch full custom 375jdj
14inch full custom 309jdj
and a 12inch 44mag Bullberry that I'm thinking
about making into a 430jdj
I just love shooting the 375 at the range about two weeks before the opener of deer season. I just about blew the guy's hat off that was shooting next to me with the muzzle blast. After a few more shots he could stand it no longer and had to ask if he could shoot it. One shot and he too was hooked

Well I don't know what its based on off the top of my head I think it stands alone from the old Ballard days, But it is granddaddy to the 30-30.
It is said that if the 45-70 was the 30-06 of its day then the 38-55 was the 308, popularity wise lest some one reads me wrong. This isnt a real powerful cartridge tho I imagine it would be great for deer, bear, and such at reasonable distances to perhaps 200 yds. It is a very accurate round tho and if I can get groups to an 1"-1 1/2 at 100 then it is capable of better. Recoil is very slight and a pure joy to shoot.
I also have a 35 rem. very accurate.
A 30-30 carbine
30-30 imp. super 16
25-35 Custom that used to sport the infamous fluted chamber. Havent shot but about 40-50 rnds thru this but it shows good potential. I'll start playing with it next.
and a 10" 44 mag.
My ultimate goal is to collect all the bbls./cartridges based on the 30-30 case.
We'll see
Wes

Rich JakeMine is a 45 Colt with a 250 XTP over 20.5 Grains of AA#9 For a velocity of 1350 Fps. If recoil is what your looking for, you could go to 300 Grain XTP's over 21.5 of 296 w/ mag primer. It's la lot of fun to hold onto. The 250's are a lot easier to handle.

Bill MUnder .40", but I think it is a true hand-cannon: Braked 16" VVCG Encore barrel in 375 H&H w/1.5-4 Burris. Top "energy" load thus far 76.0 gr RL 15 pushed some Nosler 260 Ballistic tips to 2500 fps average (Load from Jamison article in G&A, and max. in my 2 guns).
I like it, and hope to whack a Whitetail with it this year....
Bill

<awtc>Guys
Great stuff out there! Nice pics too Sean! All bores excepted. BillM nice with the 375 H&H! This stuff is great. I am getting about 2000-2050 with a 400 grain Hornady over 96 grains of Re22 in my Rigby.
Keep up the post!
20 July 2002, 03:05
<awtc>Yeah I know...I am sick of these pics too. I couldn't resist. By the way Jay I am glad the 35-06JDJ is making its mark "felt."
web page20 July 2002, 03:18
Mike BellmThe 12" braked .45/70 waiting to be blued should make someone happy, it appears. Same exact brake as on Sean's .44 Mag. Beautifully cut throat, totally unlike the factory chambers.
I know. I'm weird. Everyone gets all fired up about other things while I judge barrels very largely by how that mysterious and very rarely understood thing called the throat is cut.
I had two .458 Contender barrels to add to the blue batch still accumulating, and the throats in both warm my heart. The second barrel, btw, is a 16 1/2" barrel with no brake as yet. Can be had at a very nice price sans brake.
I have always turned my nose up at .45/70s in favor of .444 Marlins, but darned if that 12" .45/70 isn't appealing, especially with bear season opening Aug. 1.
Fireball, what happened to your .444 Marlin? You did not list it. Went down the road???
Mike
20 July 2002, 03:24
Bill MAnd the naysayers said that we couldn't burn enough powder in these short barrels to make it worthwhile....
That Rigby sure packs a wallop, too!
I wanted a rifle chambered for a round big enough to hunt some of the bigger critters in Afica someday, but wanted to stay "moderate". If I find out that I need more, I can always go bigger later. And it's like they say, a 375H&H is like a pair of black dress shoes - every body should have at least one
Sure would be fun to have a pistol that shoots 50 BMG projectiles....
Best regards, Bill
20 July 2002, 05:04
<Lee S. Forsberg>There are some big guns out there. 50AK, must be a hand full. I put mine on a #1 Ruger. What grain bullet are you using?
I shoot .223, 45 Colt, 44 Mag. on a T/C. 5.7 Johnson Spitfire 338 and 375 caliber on XP's
20 July 2002, 07:49
<awtc>BillM
My Rigby barrel 15 in., has no powder residue after firing so I agree with your post...as for the black dress shoes...you bet! This is my favorite barrel so far.
Contenders...14" 358JDJ.done by SSK, 20" 358x444 done by Van Horn, 14" 444Marlin done by Mike Bellm and an 8" 44mag. done by VVCG.
I didn't add the 20" 308Bellm or the 14" 309JDJ cause they are not big bore, but load them with a Trophy bonded bear claw or a Barnes X and see what happens.

<awtc>By the way please post pics if ya can. Ya can post and host here.
http://www.hunting-pictures.comawtc,
The 358:444 aka 358JDJ Is not the 358bellm. Close but not the same. Dave Van Horn built the barrel and marked it 358:444. I haven't shot it yet.
But I will soon.

SurveyorContender85,
Don't you dare apologize for owning a 7-30Waters,
10" just makes it easier to carry! (A lot easier than my 7-30W, I'll bet!)That 2-1/2" wide forend makes it hard to holster

As for big bore, I have a 10"bull .44mag Stainless Contender, No pic yet.
