I am new to the T/C world, so I need some advice.

I recently purchase a T/C contender in .223 in stainless. I would like to purchase a barrel, youth stock and handguard so that my son can use it as his big game gun (meaning deer). I was thinking of a 20 or 21" barrel in 7-30 waters. I would like to keep it as light as possible yet having 250 yd range capabilities. What do you guys think?

I think you made an excellent choice. Bought both of my boys a TC contender carbine when they became old enough. My older boy had a 7-30 Waters. Never connected on a deer with it but I'm sure it would work fine.

Bow, I like your logic. In fact, I've done the same thing. My 9 y/o son used the Contender carbine in 22 LR to get acquainted w/ the gun, squirrel hunt, and target practice.. I've got a 300/221 20" carbine barrel ordered for him to use deer hunting. I like the 300/221 because it has decent ballistics (125 gr bullet at 2400-2500 fps) w/ very minimal recoil. The 7-30 Waters should also do quite well. For the recoil sensitive, the 7 TCU would also be a consideration. Don't forget about a possible 22 LR barrel, as well. They're inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to shoot, and are great for the beginning hunter (or more advanced for that matter, as well) to learn with.

If I did not already have an extra Contender frame to work w/, I would've also considered buying a Handi-Rifle. It has the advantage of some higher pressure rounds than the Contender, as well as a muzzleloader barrel; it does NOT have the capability of being shot as a handgun, though. Gary T.
