<1_pointer>Would this be legal?
Say you have a 15" Encore pistol barrel and want to use it as a rifle. Being that it's under 16" could one just add a muzzle brake that adds 1.5" at the end to be legal with a buttstock?

Bill MI think that it would have to be attached permanently, as in welded on. Also, there is a minimum legal overall length, but forget what that (arbitrary) number is....
Somebuddy who knows 4-sure?...

Paul HDitto's, it has to be permanently attached ie welded.
I think there is sort of a work around, have a barrel extender made, ie slieve, that uses the front sight holes to screw it in place, and then weld the screws to the extender. That way you can remove the extender in the future w/o messing up the barrel.
That would be my plan, and I've considered doing it to a 14" contender tube, but never got around to it.

HobieDone on Contenders for years AND legal with Choate's folding stocks.

pistoljessI think the rule is if the encore was sold as a pistol you dont have to worry. If you wnat to make it legal as a rifle I believe the overal length is 26 inches including the butt stock but this may be the rule that applies to shotguns. If you start out as a rifle it has to stay the mimimum length.

GonHuntinYou can add a barrel extension as long as it is permanently attached......BATF says high temp silver solder at a minimum (NO glue, screw, etc). The finished rifle must be at least 26" long.... in the case of a folding stock, it must be at least 26" long with the stock in the normal firing position.....

Mike BellmPhil, you have kept up on the BATF regs quite well, but doesn't the overall length limit apply to shotguns only?
For shotguns, min. 18" barrel length AND min. overall length of 26" (or is is 27")?
I do not recall an overall length restriction on rifles.

From Bardwell's NFA weapon FAQ:
quote:
A short barreled rifle is a rifle (which is defined as a shoulder
fired, rifled bore firearm) with a barrel length of less than 16",
or an overall length of less than 26", or any weapon made from a
rifle falling into the same length parameters (like a pistol made
from a rifle). In measuring barrel length you do it from the
closed breech to the muzzle, see 27 CFR sec. 179.11. To measure
overall length do so along, "the distance between the extreme ends
of the weapon measured along a line parallel to the center line of
the bore." 27 CFR sec. 179.11. On a folding stock weapon you
measure with the stock extended, provided the stock is not readily
detachable, and the weapon is meant to be fired from the shoulder.

Mike BellmThanks, Mark, and excuse me for addressing you as Phil, another astute gent from your part of the world.... but he has Dr. in front of his name. Sorry for the slip.
There is a minimum overall length for shotguns also, right?

GonHuntinDr. Phil????? You called me Dr. Phil????? Man, those are fighting words!!! I've got more hair than he does and he's a gun control supporter... and I don't consider that liberal scum Opra to be one of my friends!!!! Mike, you better watch it next time you come to Tulsa......might just find your knee caps rearranged by Guido
As for the shotgun regulations, yes there is a minimum length requirement:
quote:
A short barreled shotgun is any shotgun (which is defined as a
shoulder fired, smooth bore firearm) with a barrel of less than 18"
or an overall length of less than 26", or any weapon made from a
shotgun falling into the same length parameters.
It's MARK.......NOT Phil!!!

Bill MThanks for the info, looks like the minimum overall length isn't a problem on the Encore if you use 16"+ barrel and factory length buttstock....
