All,

We have the 6mm TCU, .257 TCU, 6.5mm TCU, and the 7mm TCU which all based on the .223 remington case. Has anyone heard of a similar configuration in .277 diameter? It seems to me that this would also be a decent cartridge for a Contender, though bullet selection may be somewhat limited. What do you think?

I have seen this round chambered in a rifle, but it was not the improved type as the tcu style, but more of a 270-223. Just a necked up 223 with no other changes, the fellow used 100 and 130 grain bullets. It shot real well but didn't have enough speed to reliably expand at the velocities he was working with. This project was long enough ago that there may be some bullets now that would expand OK.
As to the 257 TCU, when Buckweet gets his back, it might be a .277 bore now????

That's where some of the advantages lay. Like the 6.5 over the 7mm. If you look at various bullet makers data on them, almost all the 6.5 bullets are designed to work and velocities 100-200 fps slower than the 7mm.

There is one at Jack First gunshop in Rapid City S.D., Contender old style frame 14" bull barrel with saddle sites, and dies. It's marked 270VH. The VH stood for the maker of the barrel. It's a 277/223, I don't know what shoulder angle it has. After I saw the price($675) I lost interest. I know the VH didn't stand for Van Horn but I can't remember the name now thou.

How about .270 VJ...... Vern Juenke? Are you sure about the VH?

I have a very good article on the 270 Ingram (.270-.223)in one of my older Handloader mags. Has a bunch of load data with it also.

I think it was chambered in a 14-15" bbl in a Contender.

The article is mostly about steel shooting with it but it lists a number of bullet weights. Might be tricky to find a properly expanding bullet in this caliber for handguns/hunting.

That is exactly what I was thinking. For use in shooting metallics it should perform well, but for hunting the performance would be questionnable. Virtually all the available bullets are designed for expansion at higher velocities than would be attainable in the cartridge in pistol length barrels. For metallics, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the running with the 6.5mm and 7mm TCU's.

Pinkerton, ...Yes, $675 for a frame, barrel, & dies also seems more than a bit excessive to me, though I expect that they are probably custom dies.
