Well I went to Oregon first in hopes to take an elk with my 300Mag pistol.I had a spike tag my dad had an any elk tag.The hunt in OR. was short opening day my dad took a nice 5x5 as well, and he became very ill as we were packing the elk out.So we called it good and came back home.**Side Note** (Packing an elk out in the dark with a flashlite in your mouth by your-self with a bad shoulder to boot is no fun)....Ok not the whole elk we did get half out but, dad was to sick to go back..he's ok now...We got back just in time for me to go elk hunting in Washington.I was going to use my .54 caliber Hawken but since I did no good in OR. I took the 300Mag good thing too [Big Grin]
I went to my favorite spot before day light we set-up and waited at 8:30am my time came. The bull came up the trail silent not a sound.I said,to my dad "here he comes" but,the bull stoped in the thicket all I could see was the tips of his rack.My heart stoped I thought this is it he's going to turn and go back in the thicket.Just then my dad gave a few soft cow call's.The bull came right at us with his head down as he came in at about 80 yards.
I put the cross-hairs on his left shoulder as he faced me and pulled the trigger sending a 150gr Interlock to it's mark. The bull droped in it's tracks. The bullet did it's job it took out his left shoulder and one lung. This is my first elk with a handgun and will be mounted on my wall. [Big Grin]

I was hoping you might be able to tell us how the bullet performed such as weight retention.

It obviously did the job but I can't help wondering what was left of the bullet if anything.

I could not find the bullet the bull's insides looked like jello [Big Grin] The 300Win Mag load was a 150gr Hornady Interlock S.P. pushed by 63.2grs of IMR4064 velocity runs 2800fps +/- a few fps on avg.I don't think I could have asked for much better bullet performance it penetrated the heavy shoulder bone and blew his vitals to jell. There was no exit hole!!!
