A New Remington 870

A few weeks ago I saw what appeared to be a new 870 at a friends gun store. It was an 18" [my favorite "riot" gun length], 870 with a plastic foreend and a plastic stock.
It was parkerized, bead sight, and it has a 3" chamber. Very light weight.
The price quoted to me was very good...

I tried to get a friend to buy it but he was not to much into it.

So when I was again at the Gunstore a few weeks later, I saw it was still there, so I got it...
The price was just too good, the gun was a trade in, but it looked like it had not ever been used.
My thoughts were, I could use it as my permenate truck gun. If it gets stolen it is not a big $$$ loss.

So yesterday I took it to the range and did some casual tests with it.

First, I shot it with Remington Low Recoil 00 Buck, and Federal Tactical 00 Buck.
Both patterened very tight, as usual, and the recoil was plesant.
Next I shot some Winchester 00 and some Federal 00 buck. Again no suprises, more recoil and wider but very acceptable patterns.

Then I shot some Winchester 1oz slugs and some Federal 1 oz slugs. I shot at 25 yards and this gun hits spot on with both brands, with good groups. The Winchester may shoot a little better.

Then I shot some bird shot, forst at smake killing distances, and then at standard rabbit, squirrel, grouse and other small game distances.

This gun patterns well and the patterns hit to the sights.

Then I shot around 25 rounds of so of bird shot, buck and slugs, as fast as I could pump
the gun, and no Drama.

Instead of mounting flashlights, side saddles, and maybe even a mag extention, I think I will leave this 870 as it is.

It is very light and handy, and shoots great. [I will test it at longer ranges with slugs for sure.]

I think I will use it as my vehicle, traveling road SGN, 100% of the time. Sort of an ALWAYS gun. As it is never a bad idea to ALWAYS have a shotgun handy.
I will have a rapid response method of buckshot and slugs, and some birdshot shells on hand for utility/survival use as well.

As a plus the Wife is very familar, and very handy, with an 870 as well...

Rug

A good find indeed. I have always liked a simple yet durable , all around 870. The short length open bore makes for a great quail gun as well.
Also any all around "truck gun" will feel like an
old friend when the chips are down and life or limb are at risk .

Try the 2 3/4 Remington Slugger 1 oz. slugs. Standard velocity. They shoot unbelievable in my 870 and my Saiga. They are some of the cheapest slugs out there, I used to buy them at Walmart. They are the most accurate slug I have ever shot, I haven't found a shotgun that doesn't like them. Congrats on the good deal, and your new truck gun.

I too subscribe to your preference for the short barrel and plain bead on the 12 ga. 870. I have mine set up that way for self defense and all around truck gun. No bells & whistles for me - light, quick and very useful for many applications. I always have a quick release sling on it.
