357 Magnum defensive ammunition?

Naphtali357 Magnum defensive ammunition?
For use as defensive ammunition, what are the two or three least expensive factory 357 Magnum ammunitions having a consistent record of being effective in three-to-four inch barrels, such as Ruger SP101 and S&W Model 60?
Is any of these ammunitions effective as far as 50 yards? I suspect a better variation of this question might be to ask at what distance would you expect its consistently reliable effectiveness to become questionable?

Defensive against what?
Humans and smaller 4 legged stuff any of the modern 125gr jhp. Bigger 4 legged stuff a tougher better penetrating bullet.
They all capable at beyond 50 yards if the shooter can hit their target.

impala#03I would not go cheap on ammo I may need to depend my life on. Any of the good jacketed hollow points by name brands are very good.

PoohgyrrThis thread is a few months old now, but 357Magnum ammo is basically effective further away than most of us can hit the target. The old competition shooters hit steel targets past 100 yards..... Today's professional shooters hit balloons at 100 yards. That old hunter shot the killer at 70+ yards at the RV park in Texas. And so on.....
Speer makes 135gr short barrel loads in 38Special and 357Magnum; these loads are showing great results in real shootings.
The original Remington 125gr SJHP 357Magnum load still sets the benchmark for stopping violent felons and can be bought for less than many of the newer loads.
The Remington Golden Sabre load is supposed to be less than full power, which means less recoil & muzzle blast, so it is easier to hit the target.

Why not.
Here a link to the very proper legal defensive shooting.
The shooter was given a rifle by the governor for his actions.

BS! Distance has nothing to do with a legal self defense shooting. The test is are you are someone else in danger of great bodily harm or death.
Distance is ill relevant

So, if someone is 50 yards away from you and carrying a knife....? Distance IS a factor because you could have chosen to run away.

p dog shooterMeans and ability are big factors in self-defense situation.
We were talking firearms.
If you want to throw in other methods we can discuss them also.

If he is 50 yards away and only has a knife, then obviously there is no immediate danger.
Once again distance is not the factor that dictates if you are in danger of great bodily harm or death. If on the other hand the perp has a fire arm and points it toward you with ill intent, then you are perfectly in the right to fire.

Also Peter, if the knife wielding assailant is intent on using the knife on someone else at 50 yards away one would be justified in useing deadly force from 50 yards away or farther if situation dictates.
No distance is not the determining factor.

It is all situational.
If the situation warrants it no problem.

Peter.
Let's see, hypothetically we have an individual making right-now threats to kill you 50 yards away with a scoped rifle. Yup, that works. And if no place to retreat to safely it's likely a go.
there you are Peter. You're welcome.
