For some reason I find them interesting. What some of the guys can do with the Beretta 1301 and 300, the Benelli M4 and its clones and the Mossberg 940 is impressive.

Having taught hundreds of civilians' and LEO's to use a shotgun for self defense.

Having seen 10's of thousands rounds of buck and slugs shot down range.

I would recommend modified to extra full chokes.

If some one is out side of normal buckshot range and they are shooting at me.

And all I have is buck I shooting back.

The I am being shot at factor can help. A golden pellet, Has the I been shot factor.

One does not need them, but some other a bead sighting device helps in placing rounds on further targets.

Behind my bed room door is a full choked 870 tactical with a sure fire foregrip tac light. 7 rounds of OO in the mag 3 rounds of slugs and 2 OO in a stock sleeve.


Peep sighted from the factory. But I do have a red dot on a pic rail.

But I am most likely to grab my tac lighted Glock first because it is right there.

But then in my small house I can cover 90% from my bed room.

I much prefer a carbine rifle. AR-15 to a 94 Win to any shotgun.

I have a couple of Benelli M3’s (the combo pump/auto gun)

One has traditional express sights, the other has a ghost ring peep.

The ghost ring gun is very accurate, with hitting an IPSC target out to 200 yards with reduced recoil slugs and a bit of Kentucky windage. I keep it loaded with 1 round #6 birdshot/00 Buck/ slug for the first three shots then alternate slug and Buck to fill the tube. The slugs are LE reduced recoil as it’s very accurate with them, the Buck is the standard 9 pellet deer hunting load, and the birdshot load (as I figure the first and hopefully only shot will be at close range inside and will solve the problem- to avoid over penetration.

For competitive use I have a very modified Saiga 12 (AK pattern) 12 ga which takes 20 round magazines. It’s pretty reliable IF you do regular maintenance… like tightening the mag well. It shoots everything the benellis do a bit more accurately (with a red dot sight, and a very aggressive comp) but is VERY unpleasant to be around when being shot due to the comps. It’s also much more reliable than the 1100 tube mag open shotgun it replaced for competition use that I still have, but haven’t used in years.

The benellis are strict cylinder bore. For Buck, they keep a reasonable pattern to 50 yards (reasonable meaning more than 3 hits on an IPSC target) and have about a hand sized spread with that load at 10 yards.

I agree that if that’s what I have, I would shoot at someone shooting at me further, but that’s why I put slugs in it- much more precise.

I’m very curious to read thoughts on using TSS in 2’s or BB instead of lead buck shot. It’s widely considered more effective on animals, so I’m confident it’d flatten any bad guy unfortunate enough to be shot with it. Unless wearing body armor, I’d expect most of the pellets to exit, which pose danger to unintended people. But my suspicion is anyone shot with TSS inside of 30 yards would be DRT with one shot.

Sounds like a good idea.

But I have several cases of 00.

I don't think I'll be spending the money on TSS

I've recently purchased two of the newer tactical shotguns. The Panzer Arms M4 and a KelTec KSG. The
Panzer is really impressive, every bit a clone of the M4. The KelTec has a great "cool factor" as you don't see then as often at the range, but the feeding can be a bit finnicky and the short bull pup design takes some getting used to. I do like the notion of 7 slugs and 7 "00" buck available at the flip of a switch.

Good to hear your Panzer is running well for you Macs.

Now I have done it. Sold my Mossberg Maverick Security with Magpul stock on it -- one of the smoothest, best-fitting shotguns I have ever owned -- for a Beretta A300 Patrol.
