I'm not much of a pistol guy so any help making this choice is appreciated. I want to get a 40S&W for home protection and limited carry. I have narrowed my choices to a Glock 23 and a Springfield XDM with the 3.8" barrel. Both feel good in my hand. I like the lighter weight of the Glock but the XDM is getting a lot of positve support. The pistol experts at my club are so divided it was like asking what kind of truck to buy. I would appreciate any input from the pistol experts here on AR.

I've owned both a Glock in 9 and 40 and an XD in 40 caliber.

In my experience, the XD is better hands down!

XD for me. Before you buy the Compact check out the Subcompact XD. I own one in 40 with the pearce pinky extension and night sights and can shoot it extremely well. Matter of fact, after buying the sub I sold my bi-tone XDm 40 4.5" bbl (at a profit) because I like the handling qualities of the sub much better.

I tried the glock 27 at the range and found the ergonomics of the grip wanting.

Ergonomics of the Glock 27 -- there aren't any. It's fat, blocky, top heavy, front heavy, and hard to hang on to. Add to that the most sloppy, mushy, squishy trigger in the known cosmos, and you have a really durable, expensive wheel chock for your truck -- whatever sort of truck you settle on.

I will have to go with Glock.

I shot the XDM, and am not a fan of it at all. I do not know what it was about the gun, but it was not for me.

In the end, it is your choice. You need to get the gun that shoots well for you. I recomend finding someone with one or both of the guns, and buying a few hundred rounds and trying them out side by side. Or if your local gunshop has a range and rental's spend the money and try them out.

About a month ago I was looking for a handgun, and I went to our local shop with a range and had it narrowed down to the XDM, Glock 30 and M&P 45. They all felt good on the bench to me, but it was when I took them to the range that made my dissision. The XD was a different beast TO ME, compared to the other two.

Spend time with them, spend time with them, spend time with them....

I ended up with the M&P at the end of the day.

BTW, did I say spend time with them.

In the end, you are the end user, and you need to buy the gun that shoots right for you and you want to train with.

XDM w/o a doubt. The Glock is a fixed size. the 3.8 can be add w/a short and regular length mag. Not sure the exact model name but it's on the springfield web page.

Talk about a plan that backfired. I went to a dealer with a range and played with a Glock 23 and a Springfield XDM. Both were very nice. Then he handed me a Sig 229. There will be a Sig 229 in my safe in about two weeks.

Of the 3 pistols you have mentioned, get the one you like the best.

As a side note, I do not have any experience with the Springfield ADM.

However I have a LOT of expererience with the Glock. They are very rugged and very reliable.
I had 2 glock 17's that had @67,000 rounds through each before some parts were replaced, at the US "factory".
Glock eventually replaced all of our work guns, I figure mine had @ 75,000 each, through them minimum.

The SIG 226 that many of my guys carried, were pretty much toast, ie totally worn out, after 20,000 rounds. Toast, as in the rails on the aluminium frame split and seperated...

Also I have seen 1911's that have slides and frames that have gone well over 100,000 rounds.
