NZ hunting book
My Kiwi mate in Dunedin sent me the yearly
calendar full of pictures taken around NZ.

AND this time: a copy of the new:
"Hunters Journal"

Just got it yesterday, am over half thru it
already. Not much text, full of great photography. Says it's listed for NZ $19.95.

I think the book is well worth the price. Can't say that as he had to pay postage to the USA on top of buying it, ends up costly.

IF you can't find it easy: send an e'mail to:
cam@huntersjournal.co.nz

Enjoy it when you get a copy.

George

I wasn’t impressed at $20 will not bother buying it. Fieldsports is same price and a world class mag.

Way too much black and dark ink.
Sure ruined the great pics.

IF they'd been decently shaded that
would have been some dandy photo work.

I agree, I wouldn't buy it for $20. As a gift
it's fine and I enjoyed it.

Not sure exactly what you mean by that but if it is like half the hunting magazines here, I've got a bit of an idea.

Part of the problem with modern printing is the tradesmanship has gone out of it. Editors and compositors used to be trained in conventions of layout and typography that made the project work and look good. Now most of the compositors are gone and the editors can be anyone with a desk-top-publishing program.

Beyond the buggered-up drop letters and grammatical errors, the biggest mistake is reversing standard type fonts into pictures when a bold face should be used.

I sent an e'm to the guy that put it together
and took the pictures.
Said the test prints on glossy paper came out
great. then he decided to use this other type
paper and never saw it until the printing job
was done. He agreed the pictures were way too dark and don't show the details.

This is another example of thin small white print on black pages. Damned hard to read.
Too many try to play games with such things
and ruin the whole project of what could be
real nice.

Muzza: There's always room for more hunting mags and books mate. IF you don't want to buy or read them, your choice.

Theres only 4.5 million NZers here George .

The hunting mag market is well and truly saturated - and there is only so many ways you can hunt something . After a year or two the only thing that changes in the story is the names - the pics look the same , the storyline is the same blah blah blah.

I havent purchased an NZ hunting mag for so long I dont remember which one it even was , apart from a couple when I was in the States late last year.

Perhaps the worst part of having a lot of different magazines is that, because sales and subscriptions can't carry them, they are all addicted to advertising. This means that any product review is basically a free ad and if there is anything wrong with the products you'll need a magnifying glass to see any mention of it.

This is why, for instance, you haven't seen any reviews of my book, because it pisses in the soup of the scope advertisers and the only advertising I've done has been in the SSAA classifieds.

Personally I’ve always considered Rod and Rifle to be a world class publication that remains head and shoulders above the plethora of other print advertising forums.

How about a way to read it? I'd be interested in
doing so.

Yep I agree guys. Ruins the whole story to read all the hype about what they used and how
great it is/was. Kind of like picking and choosing what we read, just skip over it best we can.

Thanks,
George

I could put you on to the publishers, George, but you seem like a good guy; so, send me your address via PM and I'll pop one in the mail for you.

As a penalty Smiler include your phone number. We are heading for New Orleans at the end of this month. In the event the big freeze keeps up we might come back across the south rather than going to see Mount Rushmore and Ray Atkinson.

Cheers
