Coming to NZ, S Island..fishing gear question..
Headed to the SI for a few weeks of vacation and visiting. We plan to fish the coastal areas whenever we get close. Our first fishing stop will be Kaikoura. But we will be landing in Christchurch.

Can someone steer me to a shop where I can purchase a couple medium weight spinning rigs on the cheap?

Thanks..

Hunting and Fishing is a major chain store here in NZ. Heres a link to their store locations. They will have everything you might want , in any price range you find acceptable.

Kaikoura ia really nice & relaxed. You can do a 3 hour charter trip for $100 with http://www.fishkaikoura.co.nz/...-kaikoura-rates.html

A few years ago I took my 2 kids on a fishing charter and we caught lots of fish and the guy also picked up a few cray fish fro us from his pots! Good fun & great value for money!

We saw a few sperm whales too!

Nakihunter...Thanks for that link.. I had found several other charters but this one look like a dandy.

We plan to spend a couple nites in Kaikoura, maybe the weather will cooperate and we will be able to get out on a boat at least one time. Hopefully we will find a place to fish off a wharf or beach too... Probably do the boat fishing first..get some fish to eat that way, I bet..

Thanks again..

Well, we made it back home from NZ...sure had a good trip. The guys at the hunting and fishing store were helpful and I found what I needed...

The seas were rough when we were there, so we never went out on a boat...but we did fish quite a bit off of South beach and had fun. Caught enough fish to make it interesting, saw whales, seals and penguins from the beach while fishing, so I didn't have to shell out any $$ to take my wife out looking for those things! Big Grin

We did some fishing at Jacksons Bay on the west coast and caught a pile of fish off the wharf...most of it small stuff, except for 5-6' eel that my wife caught...she got pretty excited over that. Some guys on a tuna boat gaffed it for her, but she gave it to them...can't imagine why she didn't want to take it home! rotflmo

Did a little spin fishing for trout, but only caught one small rainbow down at Tuatapere...but my friend down there had a flounder net set the day before we arrived and the flounder were cooperating.... He caught 2 good messes of flounder so we had plenty of fresh fish to eat!!

Fresh flounder for breakfast....

They also got into their freezer and dug out some whitebait too...that was a first for us..and it was wonderful!

While we were in the SI I also got to visit with forum members VonGruff and Carlson Highway...It was great to connect those fellas.

My wife was overwhelmed with the scenery on the SI, and she was already planning a return trip before we left to come home...so I am calling the trip a resounding success!!

Thanks again for the fishing tips and info...

That sure looks like a fun and enjoyable trip. I have never been to New Zealand, but its a country that I will surely visit in the future.

Jason...save your money...book a flite and go! You won't regret it, the Kiwi's are friendly, the scenery is great, and the beer is cold! Not to mention the fishing and hunting!
