Chris, I read your first post, scanned the rest, so if I missed something, my apologies.

Yes, shooting without hearing protection will cause hearing loss and tinnitus, especially with loarge bore handguns. Heavy recoiling rifles may lead to detached retinas, separated shoulders and broken bones. Heavy recoiling handguns may cause bursitus and/or arthritus in the wrist.

My own case of tinnitus came from flying, not shooting. My case of bursitus was cause by trauma, not shooting.(wrong shoulder ) I got bored with large bore wheel guns early on so I can still wipe my tail with both hands. Common sense needs application in the shooting world, like every other endeavor.

FWIW, the pain you describe in your shoulder sounds alot like rotator cuff dysfunction which likely has little to do with shooting. X-rays will NOT diagnose this problem, you need a CT scan. If indeed this is the problem, a fairly simple arthroscopic surgical procedure will cure your ailment...after a short bit of rehab.... It is a miserable condition, best of luck. Seek an Orthopedic Specialist......

Being 59 yrs old. from the land down under, and have shot high powered rifles for over 40 yrs .
23 yrs ago i was told i had lost some of my hearing .
2yrs later tinnitus set in [ringing in the ears constantly]
NO IT DOESNT STOP
It will drive you insane if you let it .
The last 3yrs I have suffered a lot of pain in the right shoulder . I have had so many tests and xrays down with no results I guess Iam stuck with it .
2 weeks ago I had cataract surgary on my right eye [lens repacement].The surgan told me the sacks surrounding the lens was torn before the opperation maybe it was caused by recoil dont know ?
I have heard of big game hunters having retina detatchment of the eye.
I DONT KNOW HOW 70yr old gun writers can claim to have worn out 8 barrels in one calibre and shot thousands of rounds of .458 and other enormus calibres and never have any side efects or AT LEAST DONT WRITE ABOUT THEM /
All that I have stated about my self is true and I would be glad to answer any sensible questions .
I hope this starts shooters thinking ?????????

[quote No ringing, hey happy dreaming! Try it, who says having Tinnitus is a total downer! derf

Onya derf, always look on the bright side I reckon too.
But, what if you had a dream that your ears were ringing?
And sure, I like it when mine changes frequency.
