"Walking Them Up" by Ken Pearce
This book was mentioned in passing on the other Sambar thread and I was just wondering what the more expirenced Sambar hunters think of it?

Are there any other good Sambar hunting books out there?

Regards,

Pete

Pete,
I wouldn't consider myself "experienced". No book is a definitive resource. Ken's book is a great motivator to get you out there and learning by experience. Errol Mason who writes for the Guns & Game magazine is also apparently putting a book together. This one may be more "technical" and useful, need to wait and see. Ken's book is a great all-rounder and excellent read for some history, ballistics, experiences and hunting stories. Very few "Sambar" books as such. A few technical studies have been published and a few yarn type books about experiences ... all great reading in their own right, particularly during Summer!

Pete E, you culd try Lu Cervi's "Sambar Hunter" Not really a 'how to' more of a collection of short stories. Very entertaining.

Cheers, Dave.

"Quiet Footsteps" is another entertaining read, related to the hounds.

Other books are " Deer of Australia " by Arthur Bentley and the new book by Bill Barry , I can't remember the title at the moment. It is like Lu's book a collection of hunting stories.
There are also excellent DVDs' by Reg Gordon , Noel O'Connor and Jim Lay.

Last l heard Errol Mason's book wasn't going to be published by the ADRF{Australian deer research foundation}because alot of it has already has all ready been printed in Guns And Game.
lf anyone is looking for any Aussie NZ hunting books they should try, http://home.vicnet.net.au/~adrf/

hollis,
That's a real shame about Errol Mason's book. Very short-sighted attitude from ADRF, hopefully another publisher will step upto the plate.

Its a good read for any sambar hunter with a few of my mates pics in it too, blokes i still hunt with..i have run into Ken a few times around the clubs and the bush and have the idea he is upgrading a second ed. anyway i`m sure the fellas would reco the book to any one at all,but the book "DEER OF AUSTRALIA by AB would have to be the most imformative of them all with a great history of the deer liberations in Aus including barasingha of all species, plus chital in vic etc but lots on sambar for the learner and exp hunter with good pics also some historical ones including red stags pulling a cart for one and also deer hanging up outside a butchers shop for sale.
