Carcano and other odds
Our local dealer can get this one at last. Its Highland stuff but it will be reloaderable. (sic)

At a reasonable price at last.

I haven't fired a shot through ours since about 1979.

I know all of their faults (but some may find more than I know about) but it is the first centrefire I ever owned. I loved the bellow from that short barrel.

My girlfriend of the time thought I loved my rifles more than her.

Ummmmmm beer

I can emphatically say that was only the case when she said no to going somewhere hunting. Like the first time I wanted to go to Minindee------

Serious for a moment. someone said last time I said something about the Carcano months ago that shouldn't use the .264" projectile? What should I look for?

We all know it aint accuracy we are after. Just the thrill of the "boom".

Apparently, Highlands have many of the more obscure calibres available with ammo actually here in Aus. Just not a case of wait and see when they may appear....

GBB,
Try and locate the Hornady 0.268" projectiles especially made for the Carcano. Most barrels slug at around this size as do the ex-mil projectiles, it is definately not a 0.264 bore. Mate has a carbine and long rifle, and the long rifle will shoot some 0.264 projectiles pretty well ... like MOA at 100m. Shocked me when he did that as I witnessed it. Odd thing is you'd think it would be a long 0.264 projectile that would shoot well, but it was a cheap Taipan 120gr. Maybe the soft jackets and pure lead core expands to fill the bore? Just make sure your dealer can actually deliver the Carcano ammunition, I had 7.62x54R on order for almost 6 months before it appeared, and I've never been able to get my hands on the 196FMJ 8mm projectiles despite an almost 2 year standing order. Western firearms can supply dies at a reasonable price.
Cheers...

Yep ammo is on the shelves here in Brissie, must pick up a couple of boxes. The AX stuff is .264" but will shoot ok.As above,Carcano's are .268".They will shoot well with good ammo, they had a bad reputation for years as a junky gun....wrong!

They are a front locking two lug Mauser action made from CZ steel.Got a picture?

And yes Lee Harvey Oswall did shoot JFK with a Carcano. The projectile recovered from the floor on the car(after striking a Senator in the wrist) was the unmistakable long 6.5mm 160gn RN of a Carcano.

My two,M38(JFK fame) and a M41(long)
