Taking a rifle and leaving it there
I have a hunt this August in Australia. The outfitter has a rifle here in the states that he wants me to bring with me. He is going to do the paper work there but I wonder about trouble with me bringing the rifle in but not bring it out. I have talked with Travel With Guns and they think there could be problems as this would be consider a export. Anybody had any experience with this?

GeorgeSTwo ways of looking at it:
1. The outfitter has put you in the position of violating U.S. export laws. He is an ass doing so. Don't do it.
2. The chances that anyone in the U.S. government catching you is slim. He is still an ass.
He can bring it home the next time he visits the U.S. looking for customers.

DoglegA couple years back an Australian friend and I were discussing whether leaving one of my rifles or a future rifle with him would be a big deal. We went down to the police station in Darwin to discuss it.
This is what we came up with:
Since the rifle would already be legally in Australia on the temporary import permit they thought it would be pointless to worry about importing something that was already there. The "gun guy" claimed that he would (could) transfer the registration to my friend and that would be that. There was some comment he made about "sometimes import duties blah, blah" but since he wound up with "but fooooook them" I took that to mean that it wasn't going to be an issue.

I suppose worst case scenario; if you got a less helpful firearms officer you could just take it back home with you.
Getting it out of your own country seems to be something best checked out in your own country.
