jeff32Firearm Import Form Question [AUS]
Hi guys - My family and I will be hunting and spending some time in Australia this fall. We will be hunting in the Northern Territory and will be traveling to Queensland prior and Sydney after this hunt. Do we need to fill out and apply for a B709A form for each state that we're transporting our firearms through or will one suffice and the other states will recognize it through mutual recognition? Thank you!
I presume you will be hunting with an outfitter/guide ? If so , then my advice is leave your firearms at home and use the guides rifle.
Australia is a country with rabid firearms laws and a Government hell-bent on getting rid of firearms. It takes months to complete the paperwork for firearms importation , and you will have the problem of how to adequately store your firearms whilst travelling inter-state.
I used to take my own rifle to Aussie , but not these days , its too much hassle - and I usually get picked up at the airport and dropped back at the airport by my hunting guide so dont have tourist time.
Others may have more , or differing advice , but thats my best suggestion for you . Have a great trip whichever way you go.
The b709a is good for all states as it is only the import permit. Not sure on licensing of yourself
As the registered owner / hunter though. Different states may have different requirements , I know WEst AUstralia requires different permits for sure.
Cheers
Nick

are you hunting with an outfitter in the NT? This is generally the best state to get your firearm permit and b709, in fact it is required as they do not recognise other states visitor firearm permits. The b709 is a one time use permit to get your guns into the country as nick said. Qld recognises the NT permit, so no worries there. NSW is the tricky one. If you do not stop in NSW (Sydney) on your way in, you are fine. If you stop there on your way out you are ###technically#### breaking the law, if you don't have a NSW permit. Most clients just wing it, as it is a hassle to get one if you aren't hunting there. It could only potentially be an issue, if say your guns got stolen while there. Once you are inside Australia there is really no one to check your permits in normal travel, no security BS checks like you get at US airports.
You can get a NSW permit f you want, to cover your ass, it costs an extra $125 or something. NT is the main one to get though and they will issue your B709 too. You may need your outfitter to get it though as they don't accept cards or US checks. I have no idea why, they are just retarded. If you need any direct contacts just let me know.
