Hunting in January i NZ
Hey,
I am planning to visit New Zealand in January next years. Whats in season at that time. What are the possibilities.

I am from Denmark.

Hi

Depends how serious you are, there are no closed seasons in NZ, except wildfowl. If you want a trophy then most Stags will still be in the late velvet stage, and Chamois/Thar will have light summer coats.

If you'd just like to hunt then its a good time to be in the bush/mountains.

Foster is right , there will be plenty to hunt , just the trophy head potential wont be as good due to stags being in velvet still . Chamois and tahr summer coats are still nice , and there is always goats and wallabies and an assortment of lesser game species to hunt all year round.

If January is the time of your visit then go for it - you will still get some great hunting , as at any time of the year .

How deep are your pockets?
If you are blessed with deep ones then there are plenty of guides who will take you out for a fee. A quick search on google; hunting New Zealand, should bring up plenty to choose from.
If your pockets, like mine, are shallow, then you could spend a week on Government land trying your luck for free.
Will you be in the North or South Island?

More details needed please .

Where will you be , will you have transport , will you have your own gun and hunting/camping gear , what is your personal fitness level etc .

If you can answer some or all of the above someone here will direct you towards the most fruitfull possibilities. If you can afford it . go with a hunting guide , your chance of success will be much better and the amount of time wasted will be minimised .

The big starter question is where abouts in NZ will you be ?

Silly question maybe, but do you still shoot and leave the animal in New Zealand?

I know the stags was big problem, and wasnt used that much for meat? Has this changed?

We still have cullers for goats, other pests which are shot and left, deer are recovered when the venison price is high enough.

Hey,
It is the north island near wellington I will be staying. I will prefer a more low budget hunt. I will carry my own rifle.

A few years ago I met a group of Danes whilst stalking in the Kaimanawa Forest. They were Bonza Blokes and a credit to your country.
Come on down and have some fun.
Good luck. wave
