April is rutting season, plenty of stags just getting velvet. The real good antlers are taken July/August. Last year I saw a 14 point stag but shot the 4 point spiker with him for meat.
An hour from Gympie would put your friend right on my door step. I live at Booie which is only 15 minutes drive from Mt Manambah where the really good stags roam in state forest.
