Western Brown Snake
This cranky bugger was pulled out from under a mate's beer fridge on Sunday. He's just under a meter long.

Coming soon is a pic of the newest addition to the Baker house hold, a children's python that the kids have named....Bob Big Grin

Post hole shovel for short range , 12 gauge for long .

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

I don't care what the range is, a 12 gauge is the minimum calibre for anything that slithers (hmmm, I wonder if I should include our PM in this category?) and a post hole shovel is definitely NOT long enough!

Alot of people up here when they see a brownish snake think Tiapan, which we get here as well, but we get these bloody things also. My little dog Harry killed a small brown in the back yard a week ago. Not bad for a 17 year old dog. Eeker

NitroX,

I should let you in on some family humor- "snake boots" happen to be whatever you are wearing at the time! What kind of chauvenist are you anyway, my daughter isn't wearing shoes at all! LOL!

Bakes,

This is a King snake, one of the good ones as they eat other snakes! Non venomous by the way, otherwise there would probably be a 6 inch hole in the wall behing where my son is standing! Even so I am the worlds biggest pussy when it comes to catching snakes! Of course I did all the stinky work and just let me son hold the bag after it was all tied up.

What was interesting was the snake was in the process of shedding, his eyes were all milky and had patches of skin loosening up. You have to be careful because they freak out on you since they can't see that well. The second picture was where we relocated him a couple miles away.

It is a cultural thing. Here in Australia when you see a snake it is almost certain to be highly venomous.

When you see a kid playing with one. Eeker

As for brown snakes, even with the 'common' name they are one of the four most deadliest land snakes in the world. The closest I have been to one, was one under my back with the back of my hand on top of its head. I slid down a river bank and fell over. Felt something under my hand, and

SHIT! eek2

It was a full sized brown snake,

Jumped probably four metres off the ground.

At least it felt like it.

It survived, wasn't squashed flat and slid into a hole. I was yelling to my mate, "Shoot it, shoot it, shoot it".

Damn Nitrox beat me to the punchline!

I was going to make a witty comment earlier about the fact that we have only 4 different venomous snakes here in North America- Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Water Moccasins, and Coral Snakes. Of those 4, only the Coral snake is neurotoxic and the ones in the US are quite small so you do not ever hear of fatalities from them. Even the landscape guy in Florida a few years ago who tried to kill one with his weedeater and wound up flipping the thing up his pant leg did not get bit as they have small mouths.

Not to say that they are not to be taken lightly, here is an account with pics of a 13 year old who got bit by a Western Diamondback rattlesnake:

http://www.freewebs.com/rattlesnakebite/index.htm

I like to make the prejudicial generalization that all the friggin' snakes in OZ are poisonous! Maybe it is not 100% accurate but close enough in my book! We got a new dog last fall, she has quite a bit of australian cattle dog in here and bless her heart does her bit to keep the snakes away from the house. Where I live they are non-venomous though there can be poisonous ones in the general area. I have a pond next to my house and I get some water snakes there too, they all seem to be the grouchiest of snakes around here also. Since it is right by the house they get the hot lead treatment, I used to relocate them but now they are usually on the other side or somewhere so I just whack them.

Catholic School Test
Pay special attention to the wording and spelling.
It comes from a
Catholic elementary school test. Kids were asked questions about the old
and new testaments. The following statements about the Bible were
written by children. They have not been retouched nor corrected. (i.e.,
incorrect spelling has been left in).

1. In the first book of the bible, Guinessis. God got tired of
creating the world so he took the sabbath off.

2. Adam and Eve were created from an Apple tree. Noah's wife was
called Joan of Ark. Noah built an ark and the animals came on in pears.

during the night.

trouble with unsympathetic Genitals.

which is bread without any ingredients.

8. The Egyptians were all drowned in the dessert, Afterwards, Moses
went up to Mount Cyanide to get the ten ammendments.

9. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple.

10. The seventh Commandment is thou shalt not admit adultery.

11. Moses died before he ever reached Canada . Then Joshua led the

Hebrews in the battle of Geritol.

12. The greates miricle in the bible is when Joshua told his son to
stand still and he obeyed him

13. David was a Hebrew king who was skilled at playing the liar. He

fought the Finkelsteins, a race of people who lived in bibical times.

14. Solomon, one of Davids sons, had 300 wives and 700 porcupines.

15. When Mary heard she was the mother of Jesus, she sang the Magna
Carta.

16. When the three wise guys from the east side arrived, they found
Jesus in the manager.

17. Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption.

18. St. John the blacksmith dumped water on his head.

19. Jesus enunciated the Golden Rule, which says to do unto others

before they do one to you. He also explained, a man doth not live by
sweat alone.

20. It was a miricle when Jesus rose from the dead and managed to get
the tombstone off the entrance.

21. The people who followed the lord were called the 12 decibels.

22. The epistels were the wives of the apostals.

23. One of the oppossums was St. Matthew who was also a taximan.

24. St. Paul cavorted to Christianity, he preached holy acrimony, which
is another name for marraige.

I think I read somewhere that 7 of the world's TOP 10 deadliest snakes can be found in Australia.

That's pretty rough odds.

Of course, growing up in South Alabama I think I was 11 or 12 years old before I learned that there was any such thing as a NON poisonous snake.

Most of what we have around here, the VAST majority, are various species of rattlesnakes and water-moccasins (which also happen to be also highly aggressive and territorial).

These days though, I don't just automatically assume a snake is poisonous or not. Now - after I shoot it, I'll check to confirm either way.
