BakesGryph do Sambar stags roar/grunt etc?
------------------------------
A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

georgeldBakes I was told they honk like a big diesel.
Even when you expect it, they will make you
piss you pants, more so if up close.
Cheers everyone that made it this far in 2022.

BakesNo I meant during the rut, not an alarm call.

gryphon1I have heard anecdotal evidence from some that have heard noises that are not "honks" I have never. Stags will squeal when fighting.
They DO NOT rut call like the other species.

sambarman338The sambar's bell begins and ends so abruptly that 'honk' hardly describes it. I like Corbett's 'ponk' much better.

I have quite a few videos of sambar belling and have been the recipient of them up close as well.

I will put one up George, its a prime example of the noise that they will give you and often when you get too close. They will hide and you will walk past only a few yards away without knowing that they are there and then head out the back door while you are heading the other way once you pass their hidey hole...or they will make you jump with a 'honk' that can be fucking loud ha ha.
The head lifts are precursors to honks as is the trembling. The back ground noise is me rubbing a stick on the ground, note she switches her gaze, that is to my dog then back on me.
Sound on.
