Transit Sydney enroute to Christchurch with firearms?

I will be hunting the south island in NZ in a few months. I found a great flight from LAX through Sydney to Christchurch.

Are there any issues transiting Sydney with firearms (not entering Australia)? The carriers (United and Air New Zealand) have a baggage agreement.

Also, has anyone cleared firearms in Christchurch, rather than Auckland?

New Zealand are no trouble to fly with firearms,Sydney should be no problem as you are only in transit.

I have never had any issue at Christchurch Airport and fly in 3-4 times a year.
