Two months ago, there were duck every where here in the Wimmera, And since then, we have had tons of rain. The wettest year for MANY years,

But the ducks are no longer hanging around.

Normal years at this time, there are ducks on most dams. And this year, we have just have had a channel run so dams that have been dry for ten years plus are full.

So, did the woodies and blackies head up to you, Bakes?

It is very wet around here this year. In fact half my farm was flooded a couple days ago.

Lots of ducks here now. They go where the water is.

Water everywhere but no ducks here.

But the season can change so quickly. No duck now, when opening starts in March, could be millions of them.

Shepp/Kyabram lots of ducks with grey teal/blackies/woodies in nearly all the hollows with clutches. Its been a good year! Likewise the irrigation channels are holding a fair amount of birds, many 3/4 grown and very tempting to the Britt pup!

I grew up on a farm near Colbo. and the swaps north to Corop/ Stanhope were often lousy with duck then. I bet there are a few there now if there are heaps further over around Shep/Ky. Lake Cooper (and the Woolwash) used to be great too.

Be interesting as we get closer to opening, where they are!

Just mentioning, we had Brittany's for years and weregreat quail and duck dogs. We have an ESS now but he has a tumor they carn't remove so is on the way out. Great retriever, good on quail.

We'll have to get a replacement soon.

Opposite us is a natural depression that gets filled with environmental water for brolgas, so every morning and night I get to watch quite a few flights of ducks. The Wood-ducks have gone absolutely crazy and the 10 bird bag limit is a joke, first time in awhile I'm noticing Shovellers and Hardheads about (but not in numbers), with the odd Plumed Whistling duck as well. The Grey teal seem to have bred well as have the Blackies and Mountain ducks.
Sorry to hear about your ESS, but if your after another Britt I may be of help as there's a Tobenlee bred dog in need of a new home. Owners are working too long to look after their dog, not sure but he may still be available. Let me know if your interested.

Just over 12 months ... I think.
Male and desexed. Basic obedience done. If a Tobenlee dog wont hunt, Fiona would be mortified! I know both parents and this dog will hunt, dam was Laurie's favourite gun-dog until moved on due to age, sire is also a proven worker.

Unlimited bag limit during the season for woodduck in SA the past few seasons. They are regarded as being in pest numbers.

With all the water around it promises to be a good season next year. MY problem is it is usually too dry around here DURING the season and only wettens up after the season is finished.
