GreybeardBushmanInspecting rifle bores
I need something cheap-ish to get a better look inside barrels.
A mate last night had this thing you put in the magazine of a rifle with a mirror in it, have a light at the bore end and get a good view. Do you know what they are called and where from?
Other bore inspection devices that don't cost a $1000 plus.
Also, bore lights. Recommendations to make and where to purchase?
Have a dealers licence so even details to an importer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ross
Certainly not as good as one of the Hawkeye units, but able to "borrow" one of the lights used by Docs to visual inspect your ears, nose, and various other cavities of the body. One I use has magnification and strong light and it does give a pretty good picture of the bore. Check with a medical supply house, but I was told they cost something on the order of 200.00
I have access to Hawkeye system, but the light I am talking about is very handy and keep it in my shooting kit. Just a suggestion.

AvatarJust hit up Ebay and type in either endoscope or borescope into the search function.
There are several hundred there on offer.
Obviously, the overall diameter of the camera head and cable will be important for bore inspections, so read the product description carefully.

GadgeThe Hawkeye borescopes come in at pretty close to $1k, except for the .17 cal version. Sinclairs/Brownells have them.
For bore lights, most are just a compact torch with a right angle 'light pipe' - like this one:
http://www.browning.com/produc..._id=371&type_id=2120 I've had one for years, which is just a mini torch [by Pelican Products], with the light pipe. IIRC I got it from the local BOC Gases branch, as a MIG welding torch inspection light. Very handy to have in your pocket at gunshows, or in gunshops. But it uses a bulb, which is fairly short-lived. These days, LED is the way to go.
A bit of history on bore inspection mirrors:

GreybeardBushmanI got a loan of a medical otoscope from our local GP today (what they look in your ears and throat with) and I couldn't believe what the inside of many of my rifles look like. Even the up market (expensive) ones. The chambers were a revelation! So I ordered one for myself.
Probably can see things we are better off NOT seeing

sambarman338An endoscope might be even better, if you don't mind where it's been

GreybeardBushmanI've ordered an otoscope as well as a laproscope

should have the whole orifice (so to speak) well under inspection
