30.06kingWeatherby on my mind....
....well, imprinted on my forehead actually.
Cleaning up some goats this weekend with my son.
Took the .300 Win Mag along for the outing. Forgot about not crowding up on the scope for a steepish uphill shot. Got me a new eyebrow !!

shanksponyKathrin say's Ouch! and sorry. I had to laugh just little as someone who's done the same.

georgeldThose things scare me enough I stay
backed away.
I've watched them bite two guys. Looks
damned painful and plenty of blood.
One was an a/hole that bragged about
shooting his uncle's cannon's and guns.
Let him shoot my '06 and watched him
crawl right up against the scope.
I couldn't watch and turned my head.
Proved to me his mouth was all bullshit.
Dad had his brother buy a FN Mauser .375 in Germany.
The three of us were out shooting it
prone, hard plastic buttplate then. Uncle the
"expert shooter" in the family. I was watching
the recoil when that bit him.
Funny thing, all of us really liked shooting a lot.
We all three shot all we wanted of it and only shot ten rounds.
I fired 4, they busted 3 each.
Wasn't fired again until it had a pad on it.
They're both gone now and I have the rifle.
Know I've shot 50 times as much as both of
them put together and so far I've not been
bit by one.
I've got scars all over me except that one.
Hope you heal it up soon and learned your lesson, plus taught the boy too.
George

30.06kingShanks - Thanks for the sympathy from Kathrin. Glad you got a laugh. I did too after the initial surprise. Should have known better. It's happened before ! Trouble was it happened early in the day and we had to continue shooting for several more hours. The cut opened again a couple more times but didn't bleed as much.
Bakes - there is a photo. Click on the link.
George - nice to hear from you. You are well acquainted with what I did to myself. I actually cut myself, just, in Zimbabwe last July with a .375 H&H. But that was minor compared to how my .300 WM cut me. The cut just gushed blood. I had to lay down for several minutes pressing a tissue to the wound to stem the bleeding. But the pain to my pride was greater than the pain of the cut. My son Kenny just looked at me, shaking his head. His only comment was that it was a pretty decent cut. He probably wanted to say more but managed to hold his tongue. It's already healing I'm happy to say.
Cheers

gryphon1I can remember one of the posters testing my .358 Norma Mag and then saying " that has substantially more recoil than I expected"
He didn't get the eyebrow but it will give you one on those uphills if not careful.

DoglegSounds like something I would do.

Did you touch bone?

Possibly not. It was a decent whack, the hardest of those I have experienced, but not particularly painful. The scopes rubber ring around the ocular lens might have prevented bone contact.

TOP_PREDATORQuick release scope mounts, make they are locked. Scope to the head from 375 recoil will ruin your day.

sambarman338I've been caught a few times, usually at the range when using an over-squishy pussy pad - but fortunately it's never been painful or particularly troublesome. And that's despite my using old European scopes with metal eyepieces.
One of my sons has a pump-action 35 Whelen. I gave him some subloads for practising, which he did with gusto, in front of his girlfriends. The scope is a rubberised Zeiss Conquest and it worked fine until the subloads ran out and he got it in the eye. It didn't break the skin but the look on his face was like he'd been hit by Cassius Clay.
