When did Sporting Shooter start?
Gryp, the other link was becoming a bit too long.

My first SS magazine is dated "Sept. 1962" and inside Vol. 1., Fol. 4 inside. It cost 3'6 pence and I kept it as it was the first money I was ever given for driving a tractor (Case 830 or Inter ..cannot remember) around and around a paddock when my father was off doing sheep work. I was nine. If mine is listed as Vol 1., Folio 4, wouldn't that mean there were only three published before this one?

I have it here now and it stinks of old paper (or plain age)

I never bought them regularly until the mid seventies as I just didn't have the money at boarding school (Assumption) or my first few years at Uni.

When you mentioned that you had SS from the mid 50's, I wasn't sure about a couple of things. I really have thought for forty years that I bought one of the first editions of SS to appear in our newsagency. Next to the Weekly Times of course.

When was the Sporting Shooter first published, I wonder?

The other thing is I know the ASJ came much later.

When I mentioned other mags that came and went, I was referring to "Gunsports" and "Lock, Stock and Barrel", a mag that tried to make Atilla the Hun seem like a commie.

Confused

I really am surprised that the SS was around in the fifties.

But stranger things have happened.

Con, you have PM.

I trust you so I'll send the magazines over and after you have finished with them, just send them back.

It would be better if you have the mags and you can photocopy what you need.

I have some early editions of Sporting Shooter that I will drag out. I distinctly remember one edition with Gordon Alford on the cover, leaning up against a tree and I think this was dated in the fifties. I collect all sorts of magazines,I have ( and I'm not sure if it is Sporting Shooter) early hunting magazines with articles by "Col Allison" and other articles by "Al Collison" I even have the first ten years of Australian Playboy and Australian Penthouse, in binders, but I guess no-one would be interested in these. I only purchased them for the articles

Whatever happened to Col Allison. He was a very prolific writer at one stage. He hunted with me many years ago.

Don't know. I like Phil Steel's articles as well. His .243 got a bit boring though. sofa

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

Yeah I remember Lock, Stock and Barrel. Was from Qld if I recall.
Was a very glossy looking rag until towards the end when the money was running out.
I think my brother had an article in one about a Martini hornet or something?...too long ago.

I only guessed that during the night, Gryp. I wonder what date the first one was published?
It certainly makes interesting reading to read the back issues from the 60's. makes you realize how cheap our stuff is now compared to then.

One article about four guys going to Flinders rangers "armed to the teeth" with four rifles between three shooters!!

Times change.

LSB was certainly ordinary towards the end.
