The goose hunt

BakesThe goose hunt
Well I've had my first Territory goose hunt. 8 geese between us, one pig and a run in with a 3 meter saltie

The pig had his head in a pool of water when we ambushed him. Turns out he had no bottom jaw, completly gone! He was on the skinny side and the wound looked a few days old. Poor bugger, I'm glad we came across him and put it down.

Hog KillerSounds like the pig had an even closer run in with a saltie.

BakesSorry, yes Magpie geese. I was suprised that I even knocked some out of the air.
Great fun and I've got some good meat. Going to take the boys next time. I did take some pic's but I don't have a digital camera yet so I have to wait till I finish the rest of the film.
So now I'm hooked and looking for a shotgun.
Hog Killer. It looked like the jaw was shot off. Aparently a lot of people spotlight in that area.

Easy_RollinsOMG,you don't own a shotgun?

Did they stink? I can still smell them from when I was a little kid(late '60's)
Warning!-Magpie Geese story....
My father was a Lighthousekeeper when I was young. We were stationed on Boobie Island in the Torres Strait around 1970.Late one night my father had to walk up to the radio room to record weather details(every three hours, long before computers)
He found Magpie Geese flying around the lighthouse windows, lost in a storm. They were flapping around like moths around a lightbulb. My father woke the other Lightkeeper and they both climbed the lighthouse stairs(internal)with hession sugerbags. They went out on the catwalk around the lamproom, all while a storm was blowing a gale. They grabbed the Magpie geese and stuffed them into the bags, grabbed about 20 in all.
Next morning the geese were released into a disused chicken pen. They were fed up on grain over a number of weeks. We ate Maggie Goose that Xmas.

To this day I can still smell the Geese(rotten swamp water),took a couple of weeks to get the smell out of them.
Found this...
Smithy's Magpie Goose Stew
Chef: Robert Lee
You need:
2 x magpie geese
Soy Sauce
Vinegar
1 Onion
2 Potatoes
2 Garlic cloves
2 knobs of Fresh Ginger
Method
Cut up as much meat as possible
Cut up geese into cubes and marinate it in soy sauce and vinegar for the minimum of two hours. (Magpie geese are tough and this helps tenderize the meat). Save the carcasses..
In camp oven throw in diced onion and potato, garlic, ginger and a cupful of water
Toss in marinated geese pieces
Cook on fire until meat and potatoes are cooked threw
While stew is simmering and cooking. Place the two geese carcasses on a grill on the fire. These will cook before the stew and are a good snack when all crisp and crunchy
Serve with boiled rice
Regards,Shaun.

BakesNo they didn't smell that bad. I prefer them to the smell of rabbit! We had goose rendang tonight and even the youngest boy hooked in. I told them I would give them 50c for every pellet they find

My thoughts exactly!

dogcatBakes - Geese are made to be shot. It is ok to shoot birds - get a shotgun!!!!
Take the feathers and you can actually eat them.
Trust me, I know these things.
I would jump at the chance to shoot geese such as yours - here, we have to call them, and sit in a cold muddy blind to get a single shot in a day....

BakesAww com'on fella's, I did have one. A single barrel exposed hammer winchester. It was as light as a feather and kicked like a bastard. I sold it to an unsuspecting work mate

I went to Tex gun shop yesterday and had a look at some. What do you think of the bikal u/o as a cheapie?
Dogcat but there is no chance of getting eaten where your from

Oh and the good thing about the NT. The permit is $20 and no ID test

TOP_PREDATORIts a real shame you can't have a semi-auto,as a semi is great on Geese.

NitroXFor geese just take the breasts if you don't want to do the whole de-feathering thing. Works for mountain duck anyway.

Easy_RollinsThe Baikals while a good honest gun are a little rough.
I'd try and grab a Boito, all coil springs.I have a boito SXS,simple to work on and get a light trigger/s.

08 November 2006, 16:32
BakesWell I did some ringing around and have decided to wait till next year to buy a shotgun, and miroku sounds like just the thing. So I'll start putting some money aside and see what happens next season.

HamishGidday Bakes,
Get a Remmy 11/87 they are dynamite on geese with 3" mags.
Sorry I forgot you are in little Johny's socialist utopia where honest men aren't allowed repeating shotguns. You gotta do something about those poofta faggot townies over there mate and get things back on track.
If you get too pissed off over there mate we are having problems with Canada geese in the South Island and you are allowed to use a semi here so come on over.
Happy Hunting
Hamish

lawndartThe Miroku is a great gun.
Over here they are sold as the Browning Citori. I've got one each in 12, 20 and 28 gauge. The 28 and 20 each have over 10,000 rounds through them (lots of practice, lots of dove and quail) and are still tight as a bank vault.
