I am not really comfortable with this but we'll see.

The book

“Pandora- Last of the Ivory Hunters†by John Taylor.

Signed “John Taylor Aug 56â€

Londonâ€

Copyright, 1956, John Taylor.

A local builder but came now owns it from a now deceased local who chased crocodile and buffalo in the Territory in the late 40’s through to the end of the 50’s. He comes from here, shot professionally in the NT after falling out with his father on the farm, then retired back here and is buried locally. Maybe, he met John?

The book is in good order, without a dust jacket. Page 31 – 32 is loose.

The photos are magnificent compared to my Safari Press Ed. John Taylor, John Dawkins and Aly are very clear.

The builder just wants to see what this book would go for and, if enough, sell it.

So, I am just seeing what you guys are willing to pay. If the figure reaches something that Greg is happy with, it’s going.

I know this is very unoxodox and if you think I shouldn’t be doing this, I’ll remove the post.

Is this going to be a sort of open auction?

Or do you want us to make offer by PM?

First, this is a first edition, please confirm (ie the "First Published might well be followed by additional publishing dates). I would need to check when the first publishing date was, as I do not know it without researching.

I'd rather the seller set a reserve and the auction be for real, than a "maybe" auction.

I am happy for bids to be on the open forum, that way one knows if one is in the ball park or not. Or willing to go higher or not.

Otherwise if by PM I would just make one private offer and that would be it.

Just my opinion. I do have a genuine interest. I have no problems with an auction but a genuine commitment to sell is required.

I am not really comfortable with this idea of selling a mate's book on the forum.

I think I better have another talk to him tonight after school.

The other way maybe is to just name the price.

I think it's the first British edition. There was a New York edition published the year before, I believe.

Greybeard

By the way I didn't want to scare him away, just that if "bidders" commit themselves to buy at the price they name, the seller should also be committed to sell, abeit with a reserve perhaps.

JMO, I would be interested in bidding only if there is a commitment to sell. But others might be interested anyway so please go ahead if you wish.

EDITED:

I just did a search on the internet to see what sort of prices first edition copies are going for.

True first edition copies from 1955 start from US$12 to around US$25, mostly without jacket and in reasonable to good condition.

I will offer him A$50 for it including postage, just to get the ball rolling, if he is interested in selling.

I agree with you, Nitro. I'll have to talk to him and get a commitment to see.

Sorry for the confusion.

It's funny how a dust jacket in good or better condition can easily double the value of the book.

The builder came in yesterday and said he wanted to keep his book!

I was a bit off ith him then he gave me a 303/25 rifle for free. And it is in quite good order. The throat has very little sign of wear.
