Culling bullets, round two
Well, the hunt is done and the results are in. It didn't work out quite as scientific as I wanted but here it is;

Between the 165 Hornadys and the 180 Woodleighs in the 30-06s there didn't seem to be any difference worth mentioning on donkeys and horses. The .300 RUM did hit everything harder, equines, shoulders and eardrums. The short ranges involved didn't really give the RUM a chance to show its stuff, and the recoil, ear splitting muzzleblast and heat weren't worth it. The high capacity mags and water pistol recoil of the 30-06s won out on balance.

I did shoot a buffalo and scrub bull with the RUM. I brained the buff, so I guess that doesn't prove anything either. The scrub bull took its first shot through the shoulder, and was visibly staggered with that hit. It was obvious that the show was over but I did keep on shooting. He never made it 20 yards.

Boars died no matter what they were hit with.

My son took a buff with his 30-06. That one probably wasn't the greatest idea in the world,(OK, it was mine Big Grin) but there were two of us backing him and the bull had to travel a long ways to get out of sight. He took a lot of rapid fire lead from the little 30-06 before he laid down, but he did and my 17 year old has his first buffalo.

I'll put up a few pics later, this airport internet isn't liking me much.

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

The Hornadys were 165 Flat-based Interlocks. It would be hard to find a more ordinary bullet for an '06.

Couple of nice trophies there.

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

Great photos and Trophies BTW and congrats to son.

They can do that. I use a 318WR which is really a 30.06 with a heavy bullet and sometimes an animal will go down fine but others, like you said !

Hey Mike - Great result mate!! It was a pleasure having you boys in camp! I think we can find some better shots of your scrub bull too - when I get a chance. I measured the bull properly after the horns were dry - 88 1/4 . The buffalo was 98.5. Both proper beasts..

Cheers mate.

What a cool trip! If you don't mind me asking, as to the number of animals culled for the whole trip, the number would be? Congrats!

It would still be third with those numbers. That is, if I ever get around to listing it. It would be next to impossible for it to drop below 4th.

We had a great time. Caleb's first international trip was very memorable, and not the sort of thing that can be easily duplicated unless you find a way to clone Shawn. Big Grin

I'm actually afraid to say. Can we just say "Lots" and let it go at that?

Great results mate, some solid buff bulls and one of the best scrubbers I've seen. Congrats and I hope you had a great time again in our fine country!

Oh, I'm already planning a return next year. That will be 4 years in a row. dancing

I like the country, its hunting opportunities and its sincerely friendly people. Could you do something about the heat? Wink
