Private land most would be 1000+ and Oufitters that guide on public land have 100,000s of acres ever Millions

Another possibility is having a few thousand acres - farmland, with probably sheep/cattle on it, but bordering the bush, which could be DOC (Department of Conservation) land.
This is sort of best of both worlds - free range animals, but limited hunting pressure if the cocky (farmer) controls access.
There are loads of places like this - ususally only accessed by local hunters with private arrangements, but also professional set ups like Remote Adventures in South Taranaki/Waitotara Valley. They are a nice small scale family affair - you won't find big red stags with massive racks, - it's fallow around there - but you will get a more Kiwi experience imho.
Not a million miles from there is Wanganui Safaris - which is the other end of the scale. They have some massive Reds there - I'm guessing mostly brought in, although there are Reds there "naturally" although obviously introduced originally.
Check out both companies' websites and you'll see the differences... cheers

Dave - Aotearoa Safaris has featured in several hunting magazine articles, and on a hunting tv programme here a few times, and always gets a good write up (But to be honest when do you ever see a bad write up in a magazine...)
However, all that aside, it looks pretty good in that it has staightfoward fairchase hunts for 3.5k, venison and management hunts, as well as silver etc for 5k and so on.
Their land is divided into free range and fenced, and I think they get a reasonable amount of trade from the Kiwi market. Keep us updated on your thoughts. cheers.
