NakihunterSambar are the most nocturnal of deer species.
I have been to many wildlife sanctuaries in India over the last 50 years and have not seen too many sambar in the day time compared to chital, muntjack etc.

sambarman338You could spend days looking at that stuff, comparing behaviour with the moon thing, evaluating what the site is used for. When there is plenty of water, it is a water hole, when little, some critters still try to get a drink. Others seem to use it as a scent exchange. (Moisture enhances smell and I've noticed my son's dog always wants to sniff muddy puddles she comes to.) As I said before, I'm surprise how little wallowing was done in the video - and not once did I see a deer roll over on its back, as the term wallow would make us expect.
