Back from successful red deer hunt
Just arrived home this morning from a week in southern Queensland hunting red deer.

Took this nice 11 point stag with my Savage 99 in .358.

Will post some more pictures later and include some narratives on the hunt, that is provided you guys want to hear more!

Bob, Congratulations on the stag, the rifle, and the choice of calibre. I am resurrecting a Miroku 81 in .358 after some years in storage. Can I ask what load you are using? Some of us R licence holders are planning a trip into the State forest next month and I hope to take it rather than the 7x57.

Garrys02,

The load that I used is the Sierra 225gn SPBT Gameking with 40 grains of AR2206 and a Winchester primer. This load is in reformed military cases which is why I am only using 40 grains. I have also tried 41 and 42 but they seemed a little too hot but in commercial cases would probably be fine.

I too hold an R license and am planning on taking the Savage into some state forests - just trying to work out which ones are best. So will be interested to hear how you go.
