kududeWatch out New Zealand, here we come! Need beer advice.
Heads up for down under; my friend and taxidermist and I are headed down to Aukland and then on down to the South Island for a hunting adventure. I have to say, I am really looking forward to it after all the wonderful things I have heard about the country.
I have most things figured out, but please, what is the beer or beers most like our Budweiser or the French 33 or 1664 or Castle?? I know that I am short changing myself with these spineless brews, but I am an old man. Kudude

TentmanHello Kudude
You tryin to start a war here . . . for those hunting in Southern lands "Speights" is the only acceptable choice. Don't let any of the northern woosies try and sell you on anything else. We Southerners have a hell'va time with it, good honest folk fly in through Auckland and get hooked up with some sort of weazle piss like "Waikato" or "Tui's" or "DB" and we have to break them out of their habit when they get down to us. Often takes some serious sessions that might not otherwise be required, and slows guys down when they get out on the "hill".
Cheers - Foster

Bud? We don't have any local beer as bad as that.
Budweiser is a product produced by filtering Lion Red beer through the kidneys of a Jaffa
Real blokes drink Speights or Tui - right ?

Paul from nzmate, real men drink double brown.
speights? tui? those drinks are for girls.

HamishGidday Kudude,
If you are going to survive a day on the hill you need a mans drink. The only two a real Southern man will be seen drinking are
a. Speights old dark for a light drink, or
b. Montieths Black for something with a bit of body.
The ony reason Tui has any body is the water is drawn from under the Mangatanoka cemetary.
Anything less than the two mentioned and the Southern hills will take their retribution.

Yeah, if they look around they might still found some 45 South or Wilsons that someone has squirreled away.
Seriously though, if you like a dark beer, then, the afore mentioned Speights or Monteiths darks do very well, if you like a decent larger then the new Monteiths New Zealand Lager is a helluva fine drop, see here
Monteiths NZ Lager & if you're homesick for something as forgettable as Bud then the Steinlager Pure should do the job for a lager with no beginning, middle or end & nothing to remember it by afterwards. Pure nats pee.
All jokes aside, you'll be spoilt for choice, this is real beers drinkers country, 'specially in the deep south. By the way, its Bl**dy cold down there just now.

Those aren't the sort of bodies I normally associate with Tui.

You don't REALLY believe what they show on their TV ads, do you?
During the 1960s and early 70s, the headwaters of the Mangatainoka was one of my favourite weekend hunting areas. My mates and I could never bring ourselves to drink Tui beer, because we knew 1) where their water came from, and 2) the number of times we had peed in that catchment ...

, no I don't but I still reckon they're great ads, laugh at them everytime they're so brilliantly nonPC. I have to be really hot & Tui really cold b4 I'll drink it but its OK like that, I could go on but it could become the never ending thread too.

HamishGidday redrover,
So you are a HB boy as well. I grew up not drinking tui as well. I remember the old man going to the Waipawa Brewery to get his flagons and a couple of crates of Waipawa pale ale back in the early 60s and thew sneaking a couple of mouthfuls when he wasn't looking.
Damn it. If it hadn't tasted so good then I doubt I would have such a taste for it now.

kududeFor a beer sampler, New Zealand sounds like a "target rich environment." I can't wait to get started. I'll have quite a thirst by the time I get there, having lost an entire day of drinking.
Some Speights or Monteiths dark or Monteiths New Zealand Lager or Steinlager Pure. Or if I want some body (bodies) Tui's. Kudude

Me too, especially at the final line of the ad where the raiding party emerges in the swimming hole ...
Hamish - no, I'm actually a Wellingtonian, have been for yonx. I just liked the north-eastern Tararuas better than any of the parts of the range closer to home. OK, somebody will probably ask 'What is there to like about ANY part of the Tararuas?' but I won't get into that!

HamishGidday Oldun,
I almost followed the creed of the Great Southern Man and ignored the slurs of a Queen Street cocky or mud farmer but I don't want you puting a visitor on the wrong track and having him poison himself on sub standard weasel piss.
Kudude is obviously a gentleman of standing and taste (he is hunting the South Island) and as such deserves to drink a tipple of equal quality.
If you want to pop down here I will take you out with a bunch of guys who will will help you to lift your standards

HamishGidday oldun,
I do specialise in shirtlifting if you are a good looking girl under 35, then I will certainly lift your shirt among other things.
If not sorry but you are out of luck.
