Wellington - Five Norwegian men who filmed themselves shooting protected wildlife in New Zealand and posted the footage on YouTube are to be charged in a move designed to prevent their return to the country, Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson said Wednesday.
Following a storm of protest, the men quickly removed a video showing them shooting a kereru - New Zealand native wood pigeon, which is a protected bird - and displaying another dead one.
Wilkinson said she was "absolutely outraged" by the video and talked about increasing the maximum 100,000-New-Zealand-dollar (73,000-US-dollar) fine and one-year prison sentence for the crime.
The Norwegians reportedly spent the New Zealand summer travelling round trout streams and hunting and posted a video compilation of their trip's highlights after getting home.
The said they planned a return hunting trip.
"The callous disregard these men showed for our native wildlife was outrageous, and New Zealanders were justifiably angered by the footage they released," Wilkinson said.
The decision to lay charges means courts could issue arrest warrants for the men if they re-entered the country, and Wilkinson said it was likely the charges would deter them from coming back.
The five were identified from records of a helicopter company they used in the South Island.

WeatheredInteresting
In New Zealand DoC do not issue hunters with permits to hunt, DoC issue people with permits to carry firearm on public conservation land.
Doc still refuse to attempt to manage the activity of hunting on public land and get upset when a couple of birds get shot.
Stoats eat 100's of the protected things every day.
The very next news item detailed how DoC were going to poison over 100 equally protected birds on a nearby island because the protected birds ate protected slugs and protected lizards.
Go figure that one out
The Norwegains involved did in fact ask the fishnhunt forum for advice on their hunting trip and were told not to shoot the pigeons or any other bird they saw in the NZ forests.
You can't help some people but it says little for this outraged conservation minister when the best source of info is the internet not DoC.
