Africa - Insurance for Aussies & Kiwis?
Could those with African experience please provide full details of any special insurance. Can we get reasonable rates for emergency evacuation insurance etc.?

Do we need special insurance for rifles?

Do we need to inform Life insurance company about DG hunting trip?

When I went to Africa I used SSAA's insurance. However, when hunting in NZ two years ago they missed the mark somehow, maybe for medical stuff, and I used Suresave Cerberus Special Risks instead.

Anyway, I got caught in the ChCh snowstorm and was delayed three days. I went to another motel, ate and drank without skimping and they paid up without question.

I've never had to make a claim, but have used SSAA insurance for Africa, NZ and even here in Oz. Make sure you get a copy of the policy before you pay the premium. They accept the valuation of your firearm and optics as stated by you, without inspection.

Hunting in Africa is a lot safer than travelling un-escorted. You have your PH with you at all times (like a baby sitter) and they know who to contact and who NOT to contact when things go wrong. They live there and your day rates will cover use of their local knowledge. They can make recommendations for insurance/assistance and you will usually pay a premium for that advice.

After you make your choice and pay up, forget it and have a good time. Agonising over minor details once decissions have been made means you probably missed the point of going and you were probably better off staying home.

I've found most Travel Insurance can have optional death and disability cover in excess of your current domestic policies. If you buy cheap insurance you will get cheap protection.

I always use the global rescue cover for medical evac and extraction
For political unrest. Never had to use it but it provides peace of mind
In case sh. hits the fan .
Easy to arrange over the phone.

It doesn't cover guns or luggage

Cheers

The best insurance for you folks in NZ. and Aust. is to stay home, send me your funds and I'll go in your place. Smiler This way you won't need to worry and I'll also send you pics.

Naki, I used SureSave and told them I was going hunting in Africa. I was covered as long as I was hunting with a licenced PH.

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"
