The New Zealand Police have stopped all visitors firearms licences applications and there is no word when applications will accepted again.

jorgeThis was posted on FB and from a reliable source:
This just in from New Zealand: " they're denying entry into the country for visiting hunters or anyone with a firearm for any reason. On entry to NZ you are required to hand over your phones and other devices and give passwords to customs so they can search your files for anything they deem objectionable.." People have already been jailed for expressing opinions considered objectionable .
If this doesn't send a chill down your spine, you're already dead.

30.06kingI found this statement on the NZ Police website, so yes, it seems for the moment that issue of visitors firearms permits may be suspended. Hopefully this is opened up again soon. To say the least it's very unfortunate timing for the usual stream of hunters wanting to visit NZ over the next few months. For any intending visitors I would say proceed with an application but keep your outfitter informed as they may be able to pursue the application on this end to, hopefully, hasten progress through the system.
https://www.police.govt.nz/adv...e-and-import-permitsI haven't heard of the statement below being the new norm. Not to say some individuals have not been more closely scrutinised but it just seems abnormally extreme for NZ. Unless they have some intel that copycat nutters with similar evil intentions are making their way here and Customs are trying to apprehend them. Customs will search any visitor suspected of carrying objectionable material. This is SOP, not new.

The procedure for obtaining firearms licences for kiwis was in the throes of change prior to the Christchurch incident and obviously would have required changes to visitor firearms licences which is what is being notified on the Police website.
There has been nothing published here about handing over phones, other devices and passwords, presumably this if true it only applies to visitors entering with firearms not the general visitor. I imagine it would apply if you arrived at the border with a MSSA or assault rifle of some sort but can't see it happening if just arriving with a standard sporting rifle.
False news?

30.06kingAn overseas friend who applied for his Visitors Firearms License in early March has received it in just the last few minutes. Under present circumstances it was a slightly anxious wait....

muzzaI believe the need to hand over your phone and password to be fake news at best , and most likely a figment of some journalists fervant imagination.
Email NZ Customs in advance and ask.
