Savage 99 wanted
Guys,

I'm looking to add a Savage 99, or two, to my gun safe. I am not looking for a collector, as such, but mostly a shooter. I would prefer a take-down model but would even consider one of the later (and less desireable) clip fed Model 99c's.

Anyone know anyone selling a 99? Or does your local gunshop have one on the rack?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Haven't spotted one on the racks in Brissie for a good while.

Only ever seen one about three years ago...and is was stuffed.

If you want a shooter stay away from the take down model the shoot loose rather quickly.

I may have one Bob in 300Savage but the cost would be a bit high and getting it out of this country at the moment would be problematic. Getting it into Aus,from what I have heard, might also be a dilly! derf

You've touched on the action that I think I may be forced into - buying a Savage 99 in the US or Canada and bringing it back with me. I have one of the new Winchester 1895s in .405 with a sympathetic FFL in the States waiting for my next trip to the US to arrange to bring it back with me - looks like I might have to do the same with a 99!

I have two 99s in .300 sav. but they are back in Alberta. They are not "common" but not rare in Alberta. I see them from time to time at a gun auction in Reddeer Alberta and in a few gun shops and gun shows.

The first big game animal (a moose) i ever shot, fell to a borrowed 99 in .300 sav. Then I hunted with a variety of other guns until a few years ago I got nostalgic for a 99 and picked up two. I have used one of them almost exclusivley the last two years and taken a moose, a couple of whitetails and two wolves with it.

BwanaBob,
Trawl the Australian Shooter back issues, there was a Savage 99 advertised a few months back in 358Win. If I remember correctly it was around $1000 and located in Melbourne. Anything in 358Win gets my interest.

Thanks, I'll have a look but I normally do check all of the advertising in the magazines to see if any 99s are on offer.

At the same time, I already have a really nice 99 in .358. However, mine is a reworked 99E that started life as one of those super ugly .308s, with the crappy blonde-coloured wood, so if I came across an original .358 then I would be interested.

Thanks for the info, I'll give them a ring tomorrow. Did you have a close look at them or only see them on the rack? I ask because I was wondering if you knew what condition they were in or even what models they were.

Anyone know Elk's phone number off-hand?

Had a real nice "E" model until about 10 years ago, when some Bastard stole it. Have been on the look-out ever since. I did have a problem with constant but erratic misfires, always at the wrong moment. I suspect a slightly stretched action, or just my piss-poor reloads.
.308win. Nice action and I killed plenty of hairy beasts with it. Just let me get my hands on the B....... that stole it.

You could always try John Miall, at Mialls Gun Shop. He collects them, if he cannot steer you towards one, I dunno who could. Alternately, Peter Van Meurs, he has all kinds of stuff in his workshop. Maybe Rob Paradis at the Adelaide Gun Shop, he has all kind of stuff out the back that will never see the shelves, unless someone asks for it.
Elks is probably your best lead at the moment.

Cheers, Dave.

Thanks, I have spoken to the guys at Elks and both rifles sound interesting but the prices are quite high. If they are original rifles in good condition, then the prices might be acceptable but without actually seeing them it is hard. I may be down that way in a couple of weeks so maybe I'll then be able to see them.
