I went to a flash resturant once with the misses and ordered quail. They bought out ONE of the poor little things cut down the middle and spread out. And that was my MAIN I think I went to Macca's after that meal

Actually Muzza down south there is quite a few quail. We used to stand in the back of a holden station wagon with a hole cut in the roof and chase roo's and foxes and some hares around in the stubble paddocks, in the Nyngan area(when I was young and silly ). Even with all the foxes about we had a fair population of quail that we had to duck under as we drove along.

Quail are absolutley beautiful to eat if cooked properly. Every time i go out to a restaurant and they have it on the menu it's for sure that i'm having quail for dinner.

We don't get many quail around our place, about the only time you see a lot is when the hay is cut late into summer. Then when you start mowing it, all the quail keep mooving into the the middle of the paddock, with quite a few being mown down.

Not smart birds...but tasty.

Because quail are ground nesting critturs they dont compete well with your snakes and feral cats so I would guess that they dont have a very big population despite lots of cover for them . We used to have lots here years ago but as farmers cleared the scrubby growth off hillsides and out of creeks the cover went and so did the quail . Now the cats and stoats would get any that appeared ... They sure are a pretty wee bird tho

Now back to quail, some of the sites I found say that the Australian brown quail was released in NZ. Is quail hunting common there? I used to get some Kiwi hunting mags (can't find them here in the NT ) and I've never seen it mentioned. Canada geese and Turkeys yes, quail no.

The main quail in NZ is the California version , the grey and striped one were the father has the little bobbly thing on his head . Some areas have high populations , depends on the type of groundcover avilable . Mostly in areas were there is scrubby forest edge type terrain , and access to shelter from the wind.

I dont think quail hunting has a widespread following , due to the limited numbers I guess . Certainly more folk hunt ducks and geese and pheasant during the season, turkeys you can hunt all year round .

Which hunting mags did you see - I guess they dont send them to the NT cos the literacy rate is so low there....

I imagine that being directed to bowl underarm by your team captain shows how morally bankrupt the Aussie cricket team was back then , even if it was twenty something years ago..

That Upland game bird hunting is a whole different science to duck hunting. Here guys use the non-water dog types of mutt , the pointers and suchlike . Personally I like to see quail and pheasants roaming the countryside , just cant bring myself to shoot them. Guess there just arent enough around here to be able to harvest a few.

I had a dog training video that feature training for quail but the labradors attention span wasnt long enough to take it all in . I blame the Australian bloodlines in her background myself ....

I used to hunt quail before I had a dog and it was very hard to find downed birds in the grass. A double would mean finding neither.

Brown quail I believe are the smaller native Australian quail.

Stubble quail are the introduced (?) quail for which there usually is a season (in SA at least).

I have never used my GSP on quail.

If you become a proficient gun dog trainer, I would "board' my dog(s) with you to become better trained (as adults or as puppies). There is a considerable market for trainers like that.
