Jeff SullivanMy Lab will trail a lost deer on land, but that is one of the coolest things that I have ever seen. My hat is off to his owner.

billinthewildIn most of the United States hunting big game with a dog is not permitted. In some ways I can understand that, but what it prevents is the recovery of wounded game. For example, my little Jack Russells are great natural trackers. Put them on a blood trail and they will find the animal. Game and fish authorities are afraid that allowing use of dogs for that purpose would develop into a hunt with dogs that would be difficult to detect.

Kamo GariNeat stuff! About the only thing as cool I've seen a dog retrieve was a german wirehair (or jagt terrier maybe it was, I forget) but it jumped into the surf and came back with a seal its master had shot! In both cases, splendid job!

HamishGidday Vapodog,
No crocodiles here mate. Across the ditch in Oz they have them.
The most lethal animal here is a bipedal ape that gets around in 4 wheeled vehicle knocking people over.
We do have a small spider which if you are especially susceptible can be fatal but it has been decades since I have heard of a Katipo spider causing a fatality.
The rivers themselves are more fatal drowning many more people. In fact early last century drowning was known as the New Zealand death.
Those Weimeraners are great dogs and the only reason I don't get another is they can not handle the cold like a lab so I'm looking at a chocolate Lab/Springer Spaniel cross which will be able to handle the sub zero temps in the high country.
Jimmy 308, you have got a great dog there mate. My Weimeraner, Lou used to point up quail from 3 months old and hated cats and possums and if you let her go would rip them to pieces at every opportunity.
Happy Hunting
Hamish
