Bear down the hatches, boys... this one looks bad.

Hang in there and God bless. We're praying that it isn't as bad as it looks.

Back to back cyclones following right on the heels of the worst flooding in years. And 4 months ago, I thought Cairns was really looking like a good place to live.

Is it just me or do other people think that some of the media wanka's need to be locked up? When everyone is getting out they are heading into these storms just to get a story. They are just another pain in the arse for the emergancy services guys.

Nothing, they are just called different things in different parts of the world.

Other way around, Matt. Big Grin

The distinction between the three [cyclone, typhoon and hurricane] is geographical.

Your typical cyclone is made with vodka, Grand Marnier, cranberry juice, a shot of grapefruit juice and lemonade; whereas a Hurricane primarily uses two or three kinds of rum, passion fruit syrup, sugar and sometimes orange juice.

Drinking sufficient quantites of either makes the passing of a typhoon more tolerable.

Sorry Bakes, lost my modem in a thunder storm the day after the cyclone. Just back online now. We pretty much dodged a bullet here in Cairns. We got some strong gusts (up to about 160kph) but nothing like our neighbours to the south in Tully and Cardwell. We are all pretty lucky that technology can warn us of these things and most of the seaside towns were evacuated. Luckily they were also small enough to evacuate easily enough. The damage was pretty bad but no loss of life directly from the cyclone. I spent the 2 days after working in Cardwell and although the damage to houses/buildings is the heartbreaking part for the people from there, what the cameras/news miss is the surrounding countryside looks like a bomb has gone off. As far as the eye can see there is not a leaf on a tree (and this is in an area known for its rainforest). Anyway, it will grow back. Im sure the pig population hasn't suffered (until I can get back out there).
